Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 10–15+ years in engineering, project management, construction, or operations.
  • Experience managing large-scale civil, mining, earthworks, or oil sands projects.
  • Strong understanding of development, estimation, procurement, execution, closeout.
  • Experience overseeing contractors and multiple interfaces.
  • Knowledge of project management systems and standards.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Highly organized with ability to manage priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Manage mining and heavy civil projects from concept through closeout.
  • Develop project scopes, estimates, schedules, execution plans, and contractor strategies.
  • Participate in ITT development, bid evaluations, contractor selection, and contract award processes.
  • Coordinate planning, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning activities.
  • Oversee contractor performance and ensure alignment with project objectives, standards, and specs.
  • Serve as the primary interface between project teams, contractors, and site operations.
  • Coordinate development of EMCAPS Gate 3 deliverables and Functional Interaction Plans.
  • Lead project issue resolution and change management processes.
  • Review and endorse change requests and change authorizations.
  • Ensure smooth transitions between project phases and handovers.
  • Support and provide backup coverage for the Project Manager.
  • Collaborate with Kearl site operations teams to ensure successful execution.
  • Promote safe work practices and adherence to company policies.

Schedule: 40 hours/week, Monday to Friday

About the Role

Brunel is seeking an experienced Project Engineer III. This role is ideal for a civil engineering professional with significant experience in mining, oil sands, bulk earthworks, or heavy civil infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will lead and manage front-end and execution-phase mining projects, including large-scale earthworks, mine dewatering, reclamation initiatives, pond construction, overburden removal, and other bulk material movement projects. This position requires strong project management capabilities, technical expertise, and the ability to collaborate effectively with operations, contractors, and multidisciplinary stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage mining and heavy civil projects from concept through closeout.
  • Develop project scopes, estimates, schedules, execution plans, and contractor strategies.
  • Participate in Invitation to Tender (ITT) development, bid evaluations, contractor selection, and contract award processes.
  • Coordinate project planning, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning activities.
  • Oversee contractor performance and ensure alignment with project objectives, standards, and specifications.
  • Serve as the primary interface between project teams, contractors, and site operations.
  • Coordinate development of EMCAPS Gate 3 deliverables and Functional Interaction Plans.

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 10 to 15+ years of experience in engineering, project management, construction, or operations environments.
  • Experience managing large-scale civil, mining, earthworks, or oil sands projects.
  • Strong understanding of project development, estimation, procurement, execution, and closeout processes.
  • Experience overseeing contractors and managing multiple project interfaces.
  • Knowledge of project management systems, standards, and work processes.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and leadership skills.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred
  • Experience in oil sands mining operations.
  • Experience with:
  • Pond construction
  • Bulk earthworks and material movement projects
  • Previous experience working directly with mining operations teams.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility.
