Job description

Dexter Construction Company, Part of The Municipal Group of Companies, is a large, diversified Construction Company engaged in all major aspects of the heavy civil construction industry within the Atlantic Provinces. We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineer to join our expanding team based out of our Antigonish and Yarmouth, NS operations.


Job Summary

The Project Engineer will assist in the planning, executing, and delivery of projects with a focus on safety, budget and schedule. The Project Engineer will help define project requirements and scope, acquire project resources, and support team members. Efficient delivery of project requirements, effective quality control, and clear communication of expectations. The Project Engineer is required to possess a strong technical aptitude that can be applied in an office and field role to support site operations.


Primary Duties And Responsibilities
  • Support team leads in the preparation of schedules, job hand off of awarded work, assist with subcontractor management, site meetings, material management, etc.
  • Schedule, execute, and monitor anchor and pile testing operations as per Post Tensioning Institute (PTI) specifications.
  • Track quantities, job costing, progress billing, issue RFI, coordination and tracking of extra works.
  • Work with our own project manager and superintendent to coordinate site activities and assist in tasks.
  • Order, track and allocate job specific materials and manage/coordinate equipment rentals.
  • Develop job specific work packs to aid in project team execution of work.
  • Assist in day-to-day tasks both in the office and field.
  • Support daily site level activities as required.
  • Assist with change management as projects progress.
  • Actively participate in required safety deliverables and promote a positive safety culture.
  • Support implementation of process improvement initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of reading and interpreting project drawing and specifications.
  • Any other duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, And Experience
  • University degree in Civil/Mining Engineering or other discipline with appropriate work experience is preferred.
  • Experience in Heavy Civil Construction, drilling, geotechnical, etc., would be considered an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • AutoCAD experience would be considered an asset.
  • Familiar with PowerApps to initiate material and equipment movement between jobs.
  • Ability to work as part of a construction team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Professional attitude, punctual, assertive and personable.
  • High level of sound and independent judgment and reasoning.
  • Ability to respond in pressure situations with a calm demeanor and high sense of urgency.
  • Ability to travel throughout the Maritimes to support various projects.
  • Utilizes strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Project, Outlook).
Working Conditions

The Project Engineer will be required to perform a balance of office and field work. Field work and company site visits will require the use of minimum PPE (Hardhat, Steel Toe Boots, reflective vest, etc.). Other PPE might also be necessary and will be driven by the environment of the work sites (specialized PPE, Gas monitors, Fall Arrest and Breathing Apparatus). Other travel on behalf of the company may be necessary to represent the Company or Project.
