Overview

Join to apply for the Project Engineer role at Syensqo. Syensqo is a science company developing groundbreaking solutions across diverse industries. We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer / Project Manager to support the Chemical Manufacturing facility at the Cytec Niagara Falls, Canada site. Primary responsibilities include leading capital project installations at this site with typical project budgets around CAD 3,000,000 per annum for multiple projects, focusing on process and capacity improvements, new product introduction in existing assets, and maintenance activities. Compliance with all codes, standards, safe work requirements and project management best practices is a core expectation. This role reports to the Site Projects Group Manager and interacts with other Project Engineers / Project Managers, Area Process / Operations Engineers and the Site Maintenance, Operations and HSE Teams.

Responsibilities
  • Lead capital projects from scope definition through to execution, including planning, cost / benefit analysis, design, testing, implementation, and ongoing support.
  • Investigate alternative solutions and prepare assessment-grade cost estimates for proposed solutions.
  • Oversee detailed process and other engineering design elements as required.
  • Prepare project planning packages for funding requests, including definition phase cost estimates, resource-loaded schedules, project execution plans, risk registers, and safety (hazards) reviews.
  • Manage projects within deadlines and budgets, coordinating with key stakeholders to execute the project plan.
  • Ensure understanding of Business Readiness stage gate deliverables across workstreams.
  • Coordinate change management and employee engagement activities to ensure successful system implementation with process redesign and training.
  • Provide status updates to company management through ongoing communication and presentations.
  • Act as an internal project resource on other corporate projects, contributing business process knowledge, facilitation, leadership, and system development experience.
  • Support funding approval processes and manage project procurement and contracting phases.
  • Lead field supervision of construction activities and ensure safe practices by contractors and site personnel.
  • Ensure proper turnover of completed projects to the operating unit and completion of final project documentation.
  • Take ownership of assigned projects to deliver the agreed scope on time, on budget, with no safety or environmental incidents.
  • As part of annual Capital Budgeting, propose areas for upgrade or operational improvement to the manufacturing process or utility systems.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (direct experience in chemical processes is preferred).
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) — or eligible to attain P.Eng. designation within a year.
  • 6+ years of experience in the chemical process industry.
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience in world-class Safety, Health & Environment standards related to process safety, maintenance, and contractor management.
  • Experience in Process Design and / or Process Safety Management requirements or recommendations from Process Hazards Analyses.
  • Experience with hazardous materials handling, corrosives, flammables, and pyrophorics in manufacturing units.
  • Familiarity with WHMIS.
  • Experience in batch and continuous chemical processes; interfacing manufacturing systems with a DCS; start-up and commissioning post-project.
  • Experience supervising contractor personnel across multiple disciplines in operating chemical facilities.
