About This Opportunity:

This role delivers capital projects at Brandon. It takes an assigned project from an early idea through scoping, estimating and approval, and then runs it through execution, start-up and handover to operations.
Projects are executed inside a plant that is running, so the role carries real responsibility for planning work around production, keeping contractors safe and controlled on site, and protecting food safety while construction is underway. Priorities and budgets are set above this role; what sits here is making the assigned work land properly.

Responsibilities:

SCOPE AND FOOTPRINT
Project Portfolio: A concurrent set of small to mid-sized capital projects, with involvement in larger projects as part of a wider team.
Asset Base: Harvest floor, cut and packaging, coolers and freezers, refrigeration, utilities and building infrastructure.
Key Interfaces: Senior Manager of Engineering, plant operations supervisors and superintendents, maintenance, Food Safety, Health and Safety, Procurement, Finance, and contractors and equipment vendors.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITES
1. Project Development and Scoping

  • Work with operations and maintenance to understand the need behind a project request and translate it into a defined scope.

  • Develop layouts, specifications and equipment requirements, working with engineering firms and vendors where needed.

  • Build cost estimates and schedules that are realistic and can be held to.

  • Prepare capital submission documentation for review by the Senior Manager of Engineering.

  • Identify risks, constraints and production impacts early, before they are designed into the project.

2. Project Execution

  • Deliver assigned projects on scope, on time and on budget.

  • Follow the Canada Packers project management standard, including stage gates, cost control and change control.

  • Maintain an accurate schedule and cost forecast, and flag variances as soon as they appear.

  • Plan and sequence work around production, shutdowns and cleaning windows so plant output is protected.

  • Escalate issues early to the Senior Manager of Engineering rather than working around them.

3. Contractor Coordination and Site Safety

  • Coordinate contractors and trades on site, including scheduling, access, permits and daily direction.

  • Hold contractors to Canada Packers safety requirements, including lockout, hot work, confined space and working at height.

  • Maintain food safety and GMP compliance throughout construction in production areas.

  • Review contractor work for quality and conformance to specification and address deficiencies promptly.

  • Track contractor costs, change orders and invoicing against the approved budget.

4. Commissioning, Start-up and Handover

  • Plan and lead commissioning and validation of installed equipment and systems.

  • Support start-up and early operation until performance is stable and the asset is running as designed.

  • Train operations and maintenance on new equipment and ensure spare parts and manuals are in place.

  • Complete a documented handover to a named owner in operations or maintenance.

5. Reporting and Closeout

  • Provide regular, accurate status reporting on scope, cost, schedule and risk.

  • Update drawings, as-builts and equipment records to reflect the work as installed.

  • Close projects out financially and administratively, including final cost reconciliation.

  • Capture lessons learned and feed them back to the engineering team.

METRICS AND SIGNALS OF SUCCESS

  • Assigned projects delivered on scope, on time and on budget.

  • Estimates and schedules that hold, with variances flagged early rather than discovered late.

  • No lost‑time incidents and no food safety events arising from project work.

  • No unplanned production downtime caused by project execution.

  • Equipment commissioned and stabilized quickly, with operations able to run it confidently.

  • Projects closed out cleanly, with documentation and as‑builts complete.

Skills & Experience:

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, or an engineering technology diploma with relevant experience. P.Eng or PMP is an asset.

  • Three or more years managing capital projects, ideally in an operating manufacturing facility.

  • Experience in food manufacturing or protein processing is considered an asset.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Working knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, process equipment and industrial utilities.

  • Able to build and hold a cost estimate and a schedule, and to manage contractors on site.

  • Strong communication skills, and comfortable working with operations and trades on the plant floor.

What We Offer:

  • Values based culture.

  • Competitive Health and Wellness benefits that offer flexibility to meet your individual or family needs, including programs focused on improving mental health and wellbeing. These benefits start on your first day of employment.
