As a Project Director for Special Projects at Pomerleau Construction, your role will be pivotal in driving the success of specialized, competitive, and customized building projects typically under $10 million. You will lead strategic initiatives to meet and exceed project goals, focusing on innovation, quality, and efficiency. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, trade partners, consultants, and clients, particularly in the Halifax, Moncton, and St. John’s markets, you will ensure seamless execution of all special projects. Your expertise in procurement, financial management, and risk mitigation will be essential in delivering top-tier project outcomes while mentoring and inspiring your project team. This is a newly established division, and the selected candidate will be responsible for its creation, building the team, and its operational launch.

What You Will Do

  • Drive strategic project success by developing, cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with team members, trade partners, consultants, and clients, particularly in the Halifax, Moncton, and St. John’s markets.
  • Engage with local business and industry associations to foster relationships and enhance the company's visibility.
  • Procurement : In coordination with the Preconstruction department, actively participate in the estimation of all special projects. This includes :
  • Developing and implementing procurement strategies to ensure timely and cost-effective acquisition of materials and services.
  • Negotiating contracts with suppliers and subcontractors to secure the best terms and conditions.
  • Managing the procurement process from initial request for proposal (RFP) through to contract award and delivery.
  • Ensuring compliance with company policies, industry standard, and legal requirements.
  • Collaborating with project managers to align procurement activities with project schedules and budgets.
  • Collaborate with the proposal team to craft compelling and competitive proposals.
  • Engage with local business and industry associations to foster relationships, enhance the company's visibility, and build long-term relationships with key clients to secure repeat business
  • Lead with innovation and strategic thinking, building and guiding project management teams to develop and execute construction schedules that meet or exceed completion dates and milestones for projects under $10M.
  • Champion innovative problem-solving methods to enhance effectiveness and efficiency, ensuring project excellence and productivity.
  • Ensure top-tier quality compliance through a proactive approach, adhering to our first-class Quality Program.
  • Strategically select and coordinate trade partners, leveraging extensive knowledge of the local market, including subcontractors.
  • Oversee financial management by planning, managing, and respecting project budgets, costs, and associated purchasing.
  • Oversee and manage the division's financial performance, including accountability for profit and loss (P&L) outcomes.
  • Inspire and mentor your project team, providing coaching and guidance to help them advance in their careers.
  • Act as a risk management expert, minimizing associated project risks through strategic oversight.
  • Deliver comprehensive project reports for executive teams and client groups, showcasing project achievements and insights.
  • Lead in Health, Safety, and Environmental Protection, applying project-specific safety standards to promote Pomerleau’s HS&E standards, applicable OH&S acts, regulations, and codes with all employees and trade partners.

This role could be for you if you have

  • Extensive experience building, managing and leading teams for projects under $10M.
  • Experience developing business with both private and public clients in sectors such as university, recreation, wastewater treatment, water treatment, long-term care, healthcare, office buildings, and light industrial.
  • A University degree / diploma in Engineering or a related field.
  • Strong business acumen and knowledge of project management methodologies, financial management, Canadian building codes, and associated legislations.
  • A proven track record of team leadership and a knack for coaching and mentoring others.
  • The ability to effectively influence others and successfully resolve a variety of client, project, and technical issues.
  • Previous experience with scheduling software.
  • Vast knowledge of the local market, including subcontractors in the Halifax, Moncton, and St. John’s markets.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset, with a focus on innovation and growth.
