Job summary

GHD is seeking a Project Director/Manager to advance highway planning and design across Ontario, with flexibility to work from Markham or other GTA offices. The role offers exposure to senior leadership, staff development, and business development within a growing Canadian operations team.

Responsibilities include leading multi-disciplinary teams, delivering complex road and bridge projects, managing proposals, budgets, and client relationships, and mentoring junior staff.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in Civil Engineering.

  • Ontario P.Eng designation required (or eligible).
  • 15+ years of experience in planning and design of transportation infrastructure projects, including project management.

Responsibilities

  • Successful delivery of highway planning and design projects.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary teams for preliminary and detail design road and bridge projects for municipal clients as a Project Manager.
  • Take ownership for all aspects of the management of projects from proposal to close-out, including managing teams, sub-consultants, budgets, schedule, quality, safety, and client satisfaction.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to intermediate and junior staff.
  • Work collaboratively in small and large teams, owning the integration with other engineering disciplines, engineers, and design staff in the production of high-quality project deliverables.
  • Manage staff including performance, workload, and supporting their technical and professional development.
  • Promote best practices and leadership in transportation projects.
  • Support Business Development including capture planning and leading proposals.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the business development strategy for MTO and related clients, including creating capture plans and enhancing client relationships.
  • Apply expertise using a variety of transportation solutions to help clients, including corridor planning, highway and freeway planning and design, green infrastructure strategies, intersection and interchange design, digital delivery, integrated transportation technology/ITS solutions, managing highway and bridge rehabilitation and expansion design projects, and roundabout design.

Who are we looking for?

Our Ontario transportation team is looking for a Project Director ready to join our growing Canadian Operations in our Markham office. This position can be flexible to be located in any of our GTA offices, including Mississauga, Toronto, Waterloo and Whitby.

The transportation team within GHD works with Provincial, Regional, and local municipal transportation agencies, as well as select contracting partners, on projects including highways, roads and bridges, transit and multi‑modal infrastructure, and transportation planning. Our team provides integrated transportation services throughout the project lifecycle from initial policy, transportation economics, and business case advice, through planning, concept, environmental assessment, detailed design, construction administration, and asset management support.

This role is intended for a Project Manager and Project Director interested in advancing their career leading highway planning and design projects. The role will provide exposure to and opportunities for growth in business development, staff management, and operations management.

  • Experience working with the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario.
  • Experience working with other highway agencies and municipal transportation clients would be an asset.
  • Experience managing design projects in collaborative models (e.g., Progressive Design‑Build, Alliance, CMGC) would be an asset.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven track record to develop, mentor, and lead professional technical staff.
