Job summary

Stantec's Buildings team is seeking a Major Projects Director – Buildings for Montréal, Laval or Longueuil offices to support large projects across Quebec and North America. You will lead a multidisciplinary team in project management and controls, driving delivery, financial monitoring and quality across complex assignments.

Qualifications include 15+ years as a building PM/director, PE in Quebec, and strong knowledge of IPD, P3 and design-build, with fluency in English and French.

Qualifications

  • Professional engineer licensed in Quebec (Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec).
  • 15+ years of building project management or director experience.
  • Strong knowledge of design-build, P3 and IPD delivery methods.
  • Ability to lead large, multi-disciplinary teams.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Buildings Major Projects team, which is responsible for a portfolio of large-scale, complex projects. The team is seeking a Major Projects Director – Buildings for its Montréal, Laval or Longueuil office to support major projects across Quebec while collaborating with major projects teams throughout North America.

Working closely with project teams, the Major Projects Director promotes excellence in the delivery of projects with fees exceeding $500K under alternative delivery models, or $5M under traditional delivery models.

Reporting to the Senior Operations Director, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to lead a multidisciplinary team of 15 or more professionals in project management and project controls, as well as a design team.

Your Day-to-Day at Stantec

As a Major Projects Director, you will be responsible for the full project life cycle, including the technical design of plans and specifications, as well as the management and delivery of large-scale building projects. You will take charge of major projects and have the opportunity to participate in and oversee structural, mechanical and electrical design teams.

You will also be responsible for coordinating engineering work, planning, and quality-control monitoring. You will play a key role in project delivery, management and administration by coordinating all activities related to project start-up, quality and financial monitoring, and project closeout within your discipline.

More specifically, you will be responsible for:
  • Planning, organizing and coordinating major projects, with full responsibility for preparing plans and specifications and for managing and delivering significant projects for key clients.
  • Developing, maintaining and monitoring the project master schedule.
  • Implementing and maintaining the project management framework to ensure quality, value, schedule compliance and project profitability.
  • Providing technical expertise as a key resource for major projects and leading design engineers and other specialists to meet project needs.
  • Ensuring project compliance, reviewing key project deliverables for technical feasibility, and ensuring consistency across technical documents.
  • Coaching team members to support their professional development.
  • Working with project teams to develop creative, effective and feasible ideas and solutions.
  • Implementing risk management processes across all major projects to mitigate risks to Stantec.
  • Participating in risk reviews for alternative-delivery and high-fee projects.
  • Reviewing and understanding contracts, including legal terms and conditions.
  • Exercising independent judgment after consulting the appropriate project team members and advisors.
  • Collaborating and communicating proactively with project teams, clients, subcontractors, and the risk management, finance, insurance and legal teams.
  • Supporting negotiations with clients and subcontractors.
  • Supporting the management and resolution of commercial issues with clients and subcontractors throughout all project phases, involving the project team as needed.
  • Supporting business development activities involving contractors and construction management.
Your Background:
  • Member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec.
  • More than 15 years of experience as a building project manager or project director in a consulting engineering environment.
  • Excellent technical and contractual knowledge, along with a thorough understanding of the construction industry and project delivery methods, including design-build, public-private partnerships (P3), integrated project delivery (IPD), and others.
  • Ability to manage large, complex projects involving numerous stakeholders and issues.
  • Knowledge of scheduling, project controls and document management, and how to integrate these activities into projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership and a proven ability to implement continuous-improvement initiatives.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and engagement skills, with the ability to inspire the team to achieve business objectives.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and step into a leadership role when required.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with clients and subcontractors.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both English and French, orally and in writing.
Pay Transparency:

In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
