Job Summary

Under the supervision of the UBC PI, Professor Shannon, and working closely with the other investigators and collaborators, the Youth Sexual Health and Reproductive Justice Project is a partnership with Action Canada on a community-engaged research project focused on documenting youth perspectives on sexual health care and barriers and facilitators to equitable sexual health care for diverse youth in Canada and facilitate the creation of youth-centred sexual health KT products (e.g. visuals, stories, maps) on equitable sexual health care for diverse youth.

The part-time Project Coordinator will work primarily remotely with Dr. Shannon, other national academic members (including Dr. Charlotte Loppie (UVic), Dr. A.J. Lowik (U of Lethbridge), Dr. Logie (UofT)) of the national youth project team and the community partner leads (Action Canada), youth co-researchers, students, and other collaborators. They will provide research administrative coordination and support to the Principal Investigator and team. Day to day activities will include assisting with the edit of study materials for ethics approval, communicating with community partners, training and supporting youth co-researchers, leading participant recruitment and enrolment, overseeing data collection and management, organizing and attending team meetings, and facilitating with knowledge translation activities with partners and youth co-researchers. Due to the sensitive nature of our research, this Project Coordinator must understand and adhere to the ethics of confidentiality, sensitivity, and respect when communicating with all research participants.

Organizational Status

The Project Coordinator will be supervised by and report to the UBC Principal Investigator, Dr. Kate Shannon. In accordance with the UBC hybrid work guidelines and nature of the project as national project, the position will offer a flexible workplace environment with primarily remote work, with potential for some in-person meetings.

Work Performed

The Project Coordinator will be responsible for the following tasks:

• Designs, modifies, and synthesizes training and research tools (such as survey tools, transcripts coding procedures)
• Assists with the edit of research ethic materials, and submits for research ethics approval
• Maintain excellent professional relationships with project partners, collaborators
• Creates electronic surveys using REDCap and qualitative tools using UBC Survey Tool (Qualtrics)
• Work collaboratively with members of the project team, collaborators, students
• Oversees training, mentorship and support of youth co-researchers
• Oversees recruitment and participant enrolment by youth peers/ co-researchers
• Oversees data collection and management of data (survey, in-depth interviews, mapping) that are conducted by youth co-researchers
• Assist with tracking, processing, and analyzing survey and asset mapping data
• Manages and oversees the daily operations and budget aspects of the project, in accordance with UBC
• Oversees the progress of projects and participates in multidisciplinary research activities
• Supervises, schedules and trains youth co-researchers and research assistants and may make recommendations with respect to hiring and providing input into staff performance
• Engage in relationship building and develop positive research partnerships with partners and collaborators
• Provides training and mentorship support to Youth Co-Researchers
• Working with partners and Action Canada’s Youth Advisory Council to help to identify and address youth and community-identified community research priorities in youth sexual health
• Provide capacity bridging support and mentorship to graduate students and youth co-researchers
• Work closely with multidisciplinary team and youth co-researchers to facilitate the co-creation of innovative KT products
• Travel to meet with communities and partners may be required (annual travel budget provided)
• Update and manage project socials
• Create plain language content for knowledge translation (e.g., Instagram)
  
  

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position works with a high degree of independence and responsibility and exercises a considerable amount of judgement. The Project Coordinator is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner and with adherence to the Tri-Council Policy Statement concerning Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS-2). Any procedures or data recorded as part of this research must be accurate and must accurately reflect the work performed. Strict confidentiality of all study participants must be adhered to.

Supervision Received

Works under minimum supervision. Most aspects of work will be done independently, while other aspects will be done under the supervision of the Principal Investigator. The Research Coordinator will work closely with the Principal Investigator students (undergraduate, graduate, medical), staff, and collaborators of the project team and liaise with the community partner team at Action Canada as needed to support integration of research into policy.

Supervision Given

May have some supervisory responsibilities for youth co-researchers or research assistant and may have input into staff selection and performance evaluation. There may be an opportunity to distribute work and provide mentorship and training to undergraduate students, medical students, or research assistants.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications

Successful applicants will have excellent organization, time management, and communication skills (written and oral). They will be familiar with and committed to equitable youth sexual and reproductive justice and community partnered research, be able to work independently, and have excellent interpersonal skills that support teamwork and professional interactions with community partners.

The Project Coordinator must successfully complete the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS-2) online tutorial. Experience with Canva (design platform), MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), UBC Survey Tool (Qualtrics), SPSS, and Zoom is required. Experience with REDCap and Prolific Research would be an asset.
