Job Description

Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Start Rate (Non-negotiable): $49.68 per hour

The Rail Corridor Extensions Office within the Capital Projects Group is looking for a Project Coordinator. Under the guidance of the Manager, you will coordinate the design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the Bowmanville Expansion project, or other Extension projects.

  • The site office will be moved to Oshawa, once the project is in in active construction.


What will I Be Doing?

  • Coordinates and oversees project(s), or specific component(s) of the project(s) as assigned, through all phases of design, construction and acceptance and commissioning of completed projects for hand over to the user group.
  • Performs day-to-day project administration such as organizing electronic files, coordinating submittal and RFI reviews, preparing change documents, assisting with invoice approvals, coordinating meetings (internal and external), attending meetings related to project or component and representing Metrolinx GO Transit at meetings with external agencies, Municipal Council committees and at public presentations or hearings as assigned.
  • Organizes and reports on tasks, in order to minimize customer impacts, ensuring all internal and external approvals are obtained, design and cost disputes are resolved in a timely way within established budget and adhering to schedule restrictions. For assigned tasks, identify, document and escalate where appropriate any project or component issues that have potential risk impact in order to provide project delivery team with line-of-sight into areas of concern and inform risk mitigation plans.
  • Coordinates engineering projects with external agencies including but not limited to Municipalities, Conservation Authorities, Federal and Provincial Government Agencies, and the Railways to ensure compliance with legislation, codes and the requirements of governing/regulatory authorities, including the incorporation of external agency work within Metrolinx Engineering Projects.
  • Works collaboratively with Consultants and the Construction Manager. Monitors project work to ensure compliance with Metrolinx Transit’s Engineering Standards, Building Code and Site Plan Control Requirements and internal user group requirements through all project stages.
  • Collaboratively work with the Construction Manager to develop schedules, mitigate risks, and review constructability for a best-for-project outcome.
  • As assigned, collaborate with the Project Delivery Team and internal and external stakeholders to provide input into the development and implementation of risk mitigation plans.
  • Provide support by conducting periodic site reviews.
  • Ensure project completion and commissioning for handover to user group.
  • Contribute to performance evaluation for consultants and contractors.


What Skills & Qualifications Do I Need?

  • A college diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience providing a thorough knowledge of the theories and practices of engineering/architecture.
  • A background in Traffic Engineering would be considered an asset.
  • A minimum of five (5) years' experience related to the planning, design and construction of transit facilities, interpreting and applying contract plans and specifications and coordinating contracted engineering projects.
  • Knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of civil engineering and transportation infrastructure.
  • Detailed knowledge of project management including cost control, scheduling, codes, standards, specifications, corporate procedures and applicable contract legislation.
  • Understanding of Railway Rules and Regulations.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills, with the ability to work independently and think analytically.
  • Demonstrated experience in stakeholder negotiation would be considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software is essential.
  • Experience working with a Class 1 railway and progressive delivery models would be considered an asset
  • Must have a valid Ontario "G" Driver's Licence for site visits. Regular site visits are required during working hours and occasional visits during evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
