Job description

PROJECT ARCHITECT – Yellowknife, NT

Taylor Architecture Group (TAG) has an immediate opening for a project architect in our Yellowknife office. TAG was founded in Yellowknife over 40 years ago and since that time we have been committed to developing our practice entirely in the northern context focusing exclusively on northern building projects and resisting market pressures to outsource elements of our practice to southern or overseas labor markets. Our practice has grown to include four design teams led by licensed architects, a dedicated Interior design team, and specialist research and support staff. In 2018 we added TAG Engineering to the TAG group of companies to enable us to deliver integrated Architectural, Mechanical, and Electrical engineering design services for our clients.

Our approach is iterative, integrated, and process driven. Every project is unique, with unique challenges and opportunities. Using our experience, we develop approaches that address both the challenging climate as well as the unique culture and context and construction challenges (logistics of shipping materials, working in the cold, etc.). We design to high energy efficiency standards and work closely with communities to develop buildings that work best for their needs. We understand that each project – from vehicle storage garages to community centres – is extremely important to the host community. We aim to deliver deep and lasting value with every project we undertake.

The ideal candidate will be both technically proficient and socially conscious. Above all, they should be willing to learn from our diverse range of clients. At TAG you will have the opportunity to explore design responses to issues like climate change, Indigenous/settler reconciliation, poverty reduction, and social justice. You will also gain hands-on experience with project delivery in some of the most logistically and climatically challenging environments anywhere on Earth.

The successful candidate will join an established network of designers and will contribute management/ mentorship skills to support the success of ongoing projects. Ideally, this person will be enthusiastic about teamwork and will foster positive relations with client groups, while being technically proficient in their field.

Project work ranges through large-scale civic, educational, and institutional facilities, as well as smaller-scale commercial or residential projects. TAG’s projects are located in communities across the three northern territories. Travel on small aircraft and remote winter roads will be a requirement of the position.

Duties:

  1. Act as Project Architect for a variety of involvements in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and potentially also Yukon
  2. Lead and assist with production of architectural construction drawings including site plans, plans, elevations, sections and details

  5. Undertake project research including cultural, site, and material investigations
  6. Support the business development team by providing architectural commentary, methodology recommendations, and schedule and fee reviews for proposals
  7. Work will include occasional travel to remote communities in the arctic and sub-arctic; candidate should be comfortable with travel in small airplanes

Credentials and Skills:

  1. Licensed Architect with a provincial or territorial association in Canada or experienced Intern Architect/foreign trained architect or intern
  2. Minimum 3 years of experience in the field of architecture (ideally 5+)
  3. Experience in remote, sub-arctic or First Nations communities is an asset
  4. Experienced with construction documentation, contract administration, and project management for design and construction involvements
  5. Strong interpersonal and management skills; enthusiasm for a team-based process
  6. Strong communication skills; fluent in written and spoken English
