Canadian Banking Technology at Scotiabank supports all technology needs for the bank's Canadian operations, covering various banking products and services. The team utilizes both traditional and emerging technologies to deliver innovative solutions for business applications and platforms.

We contribute to the success of the Day to Day Savings products in Canada, supporting Business, Regulatory, and Compliance initiatives through development, design, and deployment.

Role Overview: The Mainframe COBOL Developer, reporting to the Senior Manager Development, will lead development projects and support application solutions for the Canadian business line. Collaboration with multiple teams to meet regulatory and compliance requirements is essential. Ideal candidates are proactive, creative, eager to learn, and thrive on challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as an expert resource for problem analysis and solution implementation.
  • Support applications, evaluate issues, and recommend solutions, adhering to architectural guidelines.
  • Promote a customer-focused culture to deepen client relationships.
  • Interact with business clients to resolve system questions and issues.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, vendors, and stakeholders.
  • Provide analysis and coding support for host applications and infrastructure.
  • Communicate fluently in English, with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Take accountability, demonstrate a positive attitude, and be a self-starter eager to learn.
  • Embrace change, seek continuous improvement, and deliver customer expectations.
  • Mentor junior developers and support system enhancements and documentation.
  • Participate in 24x7 pager rotation for application support.
  • Consider risk management in daily activities and foster an inclusive environment.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 5+ years in mainframe development with Asembler, Cobol, JCL, IMS DB/DC, DB2, VSAM, CICS, CA7, SAS, SDSF.
  • Experience with Assembler programming.
  • Knowledge of utilities and productivity tools (e.g., MVS/TSO, UCANDU, ACR, SYNCSORT).
  • Experience with SDLC and agile environments.
  • Understanding of file transfer protocols (FTP, SFTP, PGP).
  • Strong knowledge of DB2, z/OS Debugger, DFSORT, JCL, COBOL.
  • Experience with mainframe ETL integration, DevOps, web services, APIs, and cloud technologies (Azure) is an asset.
  • Prior production support experience.
  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science or related field.
  • Knowledge of data integration, streaming, WebSphere MQ, event-driven programming, data modeling, and UNIX support (RHEL 8.x).
