Your Opportunity:

The Manager, Provincial Student Placements provides strategic leadership and oversight for clinical student placements across Acute Care Alberta, Alberta Health Services, Assisted Living Alberta, Cancer Care Alberta, Emergency Health Services, Give Life Alberta, Health Shared Services, Primary Care Alberta, and Recovery Alberta. As a subject matter expert in clinical education, the Manager leads a provincial team, chairs and facilitates provincial committees and working groups, and collaborates with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders to advance clinical placement capacity and quality. Provincial Student Placements is part of the Health Professions Strategy & Practice (HPSP) portfolio within Health Shared Services. HPSP supports healthcare providers, leaders, and students in delivering safe, high-quality, and consistent care to Albertans through resources and services that strengthen professional practice, clinical education, workforce planning, and service delivery. The Provincial Student Placements team is an interprofessional group that works closely with government ministries, regulatory colleges, post-secondary institutions, and healthcare partners to develop and implement strategies that enhance clinical learning opportunities across Alberta. Reporting to the Executive Director, Policy, Regulation and Student Placements within HPSP, the Manager is accountable for fostering partnerships, driving provincial initiatives, and supporting sustainable approaches to clinical student placements that meet current and future workforce needs.

Description:

The Manager serves as a strategic advisor to the Executive Director, Policy, Regulation and Student Placements, Health Professions Strategy & Practice (HPSP), providing expert guidance on all aspects of clinical practice education, including student access, placement coordination, and clinical informatics training. Accountable for the leadership and performance of a provincial team of professional and administrative staff, the Manager oversees the planning, coordination, and support of more than 20,000 clinical student placements annually across nursing and allied health disciplines. This role ensures the effective delivery of student placement services that support organizational and workforce priorities. The Manager is responsible for establishing the strategic direction and operational framework for clinical practice education and student placements, including support for healthcare learners and the staff who supervise and precept them. This includes the development, implementation, and oversight of related agreements, policies, processes, standards, and educational resources. The role also serves as a key advocate for clinical student access and training within Connect Care and other clinical information systems. Working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, including government ministries, regulatory bodies, post-secondary institutions, and healthcare organizations, the Manager fosters strong partnerships to expand and sustain clinical placement capacity across Alberta. The position also provides leadership for provincial committees, working groups, and strategic initiatives, advancing innovation and alignment in clinical education and workforce development.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree and bachelor’s degree in a health-related discipline, with current Alberta licensure and professional credentials as applicable. Minimum of five years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare, adult education, or post-secondary education within a large, complex, and diverse organization. Demonstrated experience leading programs, people, and initiatives in dynamic environments with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities. An equivalent combination of education, professional credentials, and related experience may be considered.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Demonstrated success leading, developing, and managing teams, including unionized staff, while fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement. Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to balance operational and strategic priorities. Skilled at assessing complex issues, evaluating risks and implications, and aligning initiatives with organizational, provincial, site, and government priorities. Extensive knowledge of national and provincial clinical practice education, including student placement, supervision requirements, and the Post-Secondary Placement Agreement across multiple disciplines and service sectors. Strong understanding of the healthcare environment influencing practice education. Experienced and proficient in the Health Sciences Placement Network (HSPnet). Proven ability to build effective partnerships with internal and external partners, clinicians, leaders, academic institutions, and government partners. Advanced experience interpreting and applying legal agreements, policies, and translating complex information into practical solutions and recommendations. Experienced in project management and change initiatives. Exceptional communication, facilitation, and presentation skills. Highly organized with strong prioritization and multitasking abilities. Demonstrates ongoing professional and personal development. Proficient in clinical information systems, and Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications:

Proven experience leveraging Tableau to develop and maintain interactive dashboards and reporting tools. Strong analytical capabilities, including statistical analysis, data interpretation, report generation, and trend identification, with demonstrated application of findings to support planning, forecasting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
