Job summary

YMCA BC is seeking a Program Leader for the Beyond the Bell after-school program at Glenview Elementary School in Prince George, BC. You will lead activities, provide tutoring, and support social, numeric and literacy skill development in a caring, inclusive environment.

The role follows the Beyond the Bell structure, with a 1 to 5 leader to child ratio and emphasis on safety, teamwork, and community engagement. Start date is Oct 1, 2026, with a casual term and part-time hours.

Qualifications

• Experience working or volunteering with children and youth.
• Strong communication skills, both spoken and written.
• Ability to work individually and in groups with diverse children and their families.
• Current First Aid and CPR Certificate (or willingness to obtain).
• References and background check requirements including Criminal Record check.

Responsibilities

• Leadership and program planning for children of grades 1-5.
• Operating the program within the Y’s child behavior management guidelines.
• Building healthy relationships with children, parents, teachers, principals, janitors.
• Being a play partner and homework helper and interact with children ages 6-11.
• Assisting with implementation of educational programming including literacy, math, science, drama, games and daily activity.
• Ensuring safety and adherence to policies and procedures.

Position Title: Program Leader, Beyond the Bell

Location: Glenview Elementary School (7310 Cluff Rd, Prince George, BC V2K 2M3)

Term: Casual

Hours: 9 hours per week

Shift: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2:15pm-5:15pm

Start Date: October 01, 2026

End Date: N/A; however, the program goes on hiatus in late May or early June

Salary: $18.25 per hour

Reports To: Manager, Community Programs & Coordinator, Beyond the Bell

The YMCA Beyond the Bell Program is an after-school program for children grades 1-5 that provides tutoring, skills development, physical activity, and social engagement. The Program Leader position will follow the Beyond the Bell structure and curriculum, utilizing a 1 to 5 leader to child ratio, and instilling the Y’s core values of caring, respect, responsibility, honesty, and inclusivity. Children will be actively engaged in improving social, numeric and literacy skills while participating in sports, outdoor play, arts and crafts.

Major Responsibilities

• Leadership and program planning for children of grades 1-5


• Operating the program within the Y’s child behavior management guidelines


• Building healthy relationships with children, parents, teachers, principals, janitors


• Being a play partner and homework helper and enjoy interacting with children ages 6-11


• Assisting with implementation of educational programming, including interactive play, literacy, mathematics, science, building, drama, games, team building, daily physical activity, and sports


• Encouraging a safe workplace and ensuring policies and procedures are followed

Qualification

• Relevant experience, training, and education working or volunteering with children and youth


• Strong communication skills, both spoken and written


• Ability to work individually and in groups with diverse children and their families


• Current First Aid and CPR Certificate (or willingness to obtain)


• Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references


• Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
