Job description

School District 72 operates throughout a large geographic area. Campbell River and Quadra Island schools and our school board office are located on the traditional territory of the Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ people. School District 72 is looking for a Program Coordinator, Feeding Futures / Childcare to join our team of professionals who strive to bring the district’s learning beliefs to life.

School District 72 (Campbell River) is located on the east coast of central Vancouver Island, extending north to Sayward and south to Oyster River. The district also includes the outer islands of Read, Cortes, and Quadra. The district serves over 5,600 students in 18 schools with a diverse range of programs that are progressive and responsive to the educational needs and interests of students.

About the Role

Reporting to the Associate Superintendent and District Principal of Early Years and Childcare, the Program Coordinator is responsible for assessing current assets and operations of school food programs across the district including but not limited to existing programs, staffing, infrastructure and equipment as well as provides logistical and administrative support to the district’s childcare programs and facilities.

  • Oversee and support food programs across district sites including breakfast and lunch programs as well as snack programs for schools and childcare centres.
  • Oversee and coordinate the logistics of food deliveries to school and ensure a coordinated approach to improving food service at reduced cost.
  • Under the direction of the Associate Superintendent, drive the strategic alignment and long-term planning of district food programs.
  • Support new and existing school food programs to incorporate principles of inclusion, equity and diversity into their design and implementation to ensure that programs are universally accessible.
  • Working with school staff, manage inventory, ordering and stock control to maintain adequate supplies.
  • Build and maintain community partnerships with food producers, local farmers, community schools, PACs, non-profits, local businesses, Indigenous nations and communities, and others who can support the aggregation, processing and distribution of local food and healthy meals to students and families.
  • Connect and liaise with public health dietitians, healthy school coordinators, and relevant regional and / or provincial networks (e.g. Farm to School BC, Coalition for Healthy School Food), to support professional development and stay up to date on school food.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and implement best practices for food safety.
  • Maintain the departmental budget and provide monthly reporting to the Associate Superintendent.
  • Track, analyze and report on department operations and program budgets / costs with the expectation of adapting operating plans to optimize the use of available resources.
  • Develop and maintain a system for tracking and reporting on the school food program's effectiveness and impact.
  • Negotiate contracts and ensure timely delivery of quality equipment and supplies for both programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all rules and regulations governing Ministry reporting and other reporting requirements as identified.
  • Provide support to District Principal of Early Years and Childcare in coordination of childcare facilities and staffing.
  • Support in the monthly and annual budgeting and claiming funding available to families in childcare.
  • Working with the District Principal of Early Years and Childcare, develop age-appropriate programs that can be implemented at district sites.
  • Support the recruitment, staffing, and training of childcare and feeding futures programs.
  • Provide coverage for the District Principal of Early Years and Childcare during vacation periods.
  • Other duties as required.

Bring your Expertise

  • Preference for Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Business Administration, Hospitality or Hotel Management or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience such as the completion of a recognized two-year program in Food Service and Nutrition Management and experience in Food Service Management.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a program coordinator type role.
  • Current Food Safe Level 1 and Level 2 certification.
  • Previous experience working in a childcare setting is considered an asset.
  • Experience in the procurement of services or contract negotiation is an asset.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and a vehicle to travel between district sites. Travel is required for this position.
  • Knowledge of federal, provincial, and local regulations and guidelines related to school food programs.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, including the ability to conduct outreach to external community partners by phone, email, or by attending local events.
  • Ability to calmly and quickly adapt to changing environments, problem-solving skills and decision making.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Passion for providing healthy nutrition options to students.
  • This position may occasionally require early morning or late day or evening availability.
