Job description

Established in 1976, the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) is a First Nation governed post-secondary institution. Recognized under provincial legislation, the Institute has been conferred authority to grant certificates and diplomas. SIIT welcomes over 2400 students into our urban and community programs annually, as well as serving over 6000 clients through our eight Career Centres across the province. The Program Coordinator, Adult Basic Education (ABE), is responsible for coordinating and managing training initiatives with First Nation Communities across Saskatchewan. This position will positively promote and create an environment that demonstrates SIIT's vision, mission, and mandate. The incumbent is responsible for the coordination of programs from start to finish, including administration and financial budgeting, program development, monitoring, as well as recruitment of instructors and students, and completing evaluations. This position includes, but is not limited to, the following broad range of accountabilities:

Coordination, Monitoring & Academic Administration

  1. Identify, initiate, and support the coordination of various training programs for Bands/Tribal Councils as requested.
  2. Lead the recruitment and selection of students for all programs.
  3. Ensure the training program meets the needs of the Band/Tribal Councils and stakeholders.
  4. Ensure that existing and new classrooms and office spaces are equipped with the required resources and equipment, as well as ensuring the maintenance of the site.
  5. Facilitate student testing as it relates to the program requirements.
  6. Prepare and submit reports to internal and external stakeholders as required.
  7. Liaise with students, instructors, stakeholders, and partners to provide explanations related to academic regulations, student records, programs, and calendars.

Partnering & Reporting

  1. Collaborate with Bands, Tribal Councils, and other agencies to identify appropriate programming and delivery.
  2. Create and strengthen linkages between SIIT and First Nations communities in order to meet community professional development and educational needs.
  3. Develop, promote, and maintain positive working relationships with Bands, Industry, Tribal Councils, FSIN, funding institutions, and other institutes and partners.

People Management & Student Focus

  1. Coach, train, and develop employees to ensure growth and development of those individuals.
  2. Conduct regular reviews with direct reports; ensure adherence to SIIT policies and procedures.
  3. Ensure a positive, diverse, inclusive work and learning environment.
  4. Assist in building and leading the department through employee selection.
  5. Implement and monitor effective student retention strategies.
  6. Monitor student attendance, report as required, and implement disciplinary action as per SIIT policy.

Required Qualifications and Experience: A Bachelor of Education degree with three to six years of teaching experience. Experience in program administration and coordination is preferred, with the ability to develop, establish, and maintain good working relationships within First Nations communities. Knowledge of First Nations cultures and organizations would be an asset. The incumbent must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation as travel is required.

As this position is considered safety sensitive, the incumbent will be subject to testing as per SIIT's Alcohol and Substances policy.

Must currently be registered with Saskatchewan Professional Teacher's Regulatory Board (SPTRB).

Dates of Contract: April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026.
