Job description

The University of Notre Dame's Keough School of Global Affairs is accepting applications for a Professorship in International Peace Studies, a full-time, tenured position at the associate or full professor level, which includes the directorship of the Catholic Peacebuilding Network (CPN). CPN is housed in the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, part of the Keough School, and works to enhance the study and practice of Catholic peacebuilding in areas torn by conflict.

The ideal candidate will be a distinguished scholar of peacebuilding whose research and policy engagement focus on issues such as: nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament; extractives and natural resource conflict, including mining and its relationship to integral human development; and peace processes, transitional justice, and reconciliation in post-conflict societies. Candidates should have rigorous training in law, history, peace studies, political science, theology, or a related field, and may bring either a regional or global comparative perspective.

The ideal candidate will also have a record of interdisciplinary research, institutional leadership, and public engagement, together with familiarity with the global mission of the Catholic Church and with Catholic Social Teaching — its resources on human dignity, solidarity, the common good, subsidiarity, and the preferential option for the poor — and how these bear on questions of justice, war, and peace. As director, they will set CPN's research agenda, oversee its grants and programming, and collaborate across the Keough School, the Kroc Institute, and the university.

This is a full-time, tenured appointment with administrative responsibilities and teaching duties at the undergraduate and graduate levels, expected to begin in August 2027.

The professorship is based in the Keough School, which advances interdisciplinary, policy-relevant research on global affairs through a lens of integral human development, and offers degrees at the undergraduate, Master's, and PhD levels.

Qualifications

Competitive candidates will have a scholarly record with evidence of high-quality research and policy engagement on nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation, extractives and mining-related conflict, or transitional justice and peace processes in post-conflict societies. A PhD in any discipline is acceptable, with preference for law, history, peace studies, philosophy, political science, theology, or a related field. Regardless of discipline, candidates should bring expertise at the intersection of Catholic Social Teaching and questions of justice and war, along with a demonstrated understanding of the global Catholic Church's mission.
