Job summary

Bombardier in Montreal is seeking a Professional, Engineering - Avionics IMA Specialist to join the Avionics CoE. You will contribute to the design and evolution of Flight Deck and IMA systems, collaborating with suppliers and internal stakeholders.

The role requires deep experience with IMA, DO297 and aerospace protocols, and you will provide technical leadership while ensuring safety and certification goals. This position supports a hybrid work model with regular in-office presence in Montreal.

Qualifications

  • University degree in computer, software, electrical or aerospace engineering.
  • 8+ years of experience with Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) architectures.
  • Experience with complex aircraft systems development and integration.
  • Knowledge of DO297 and AC20-170 guidance.
  • Certification experience with TSO-C153 and TSO-C214.
  • Experience with aerospace protocols (AFDX, ARINC 429, ARINC 664p7, ARINC 661).
  • Strong English writing and French communication skills.
  • Model development of controllers using Simulink-type tools.

Responsibilities

  • Develop knowledge and expertise on Highly Integrated Control Systems and Distributed Integrated Modular Architectures.
  • Capture OEM requirements of IMA System Architecture, IMA Platform and Hosted Functions.
  • Define roles and responsibilities for IMA System Integrator, IMA Application provider and IMA Platform provider.
  • Apply DO297 guidelines to help structure IMA development, safety and certification plans in collaboration with internal stakeholders and suppliers.
  • Use the integrated tool chain to build and test IMA Applications on the virtual test bench and with hardware in the loop.
  • Develop and implement methodologies and procedures to ensure that the architecture supports safety, security and certification requirements and meets the needs of end users.
  • Define standards for validation, verification and functional testing.
  • Collaborate with the Project Lead to provide regular updates about progress, design evolution risks, issues and roadblocks.
  • Provide technical direction and recommendations in design reviews covering hardware, software, data network aspects and development processes.
  • Advise the organization on impact of new regulations affecting the architecture.
  • Interface with other stakeholders to obtain support and ensure technology is shared.
  • Prepare technical documentation and reports capturing analysis, results and recommending next steps.
  • Operate to defined schedule and cost objectives.
  • Provide technical leadership to junior engineers and interns.

You will be part of the Avionics Center of Excellence (CoE) team.

The Avionics CoE is responsible for the design and evolution of the Flight Deck and our current and future aircraft. The team reviews and evaluates the evolution of conventional systems architectures and emerging new technologies to propose innovative architectures and processes to enable an efficient evolution of our systems integration on our aircraft.

What are your contributions to the team?

How to thrive in this role?

  • Minimum 8 years of experience with integrated systems architectures such as Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA).
  • Experience with complex aircraft systems development and integration.
  • Experience working with DO297 and AC20‑170 security and certification guidelines.
  • Certification experience with TSO‑C153 and TSO‑C214 guidelines.
  • Strong experience with aerospace communication protocols (AFDX, ARINC 429, ARINC 664p7, ARINC 661).
  • Experience with requirements development, validation, flow‑down and traceability.
  • Familiarity with networking protocols and related software development (UDP/IP, Ethernet).
  • Experience with Embedded RTOS (VxWorks 653) is an asset.
  • Experience with software development for critical real‑time embedded systems, distributed systems and related technologies.
  • Ability to influence and work with minimal formal authority.
  • Strong engineering judgment, problem‑solving skills, accountability, positive attitude and strong communication skills.
  • Excellent oral presentation and technical writing skills in English and good functional French communication skills.
  • Understanding of aircraft systems integration at aircraft level, ground and flight test aspects, component qualification, reliability and safety requirements, and FAR Part 25 / CAR 525 certification processes.
  • Experience with model development of controllers using Simulink‑type tools.

This position has a hybrid work schedule and requires 3 mandatory days per week in the Bombardier office in Montreal.
