Position Summary: We are seeking a motivated and technically skilled Production Supervisor to lead and manage daily operations on the manufacturing floor. The ideal candidate will have an engineering background, strong leadership skills, and a hands-on approach to driving productivity, maintaining quality standards, and ensuring workplace safety. This position plays a critical role in coordinating resources, resolving technical issues, and fostering a high-performance team culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise all aspects of production activities, including scheduling, workflow, machine operation, and labor allocation.
- Lead, motivate, and manage a diverse team of machine operators, laborers, and forklift drivers. Foster a collaborative, high-performance work environment.
- Track production output, ensuring targets are met in terms of quality, quantity, and efficiency. Adjust schedules and workflows as needed to maintain productivity.
- Quickly address production challenges, equipment failures, or quality issues. Work closely with maintenance and engineering teams to minimize downtime.
- Identify areas for process improvement, implementing Lean manufacturing principles, 5S, Kaizen, or Six Sigma initiatives to increase efficiency and reduce waste.
- Ensure all products meet quality standards. Conduct inspections and audits and address any deviations or non-conformance in a timely manner.
- Enforce adherence to safety protocols and health regulations. Lead safety meetings, conduct risk assessments, and ensure the team follows proper safety practices.
- Provide ongoing training for team members on machine operation, safety procedures, and company policies. Identify and develop future leaders within the team.
- Accurately document production metrics, downtime, and incidents. Generate reports for management to analyze performance trends and identify corrective actions.
- Oversee inventory levels for raw materials, finished products, and supplies. Coordinate with the materials team to ensure timely availability of materials without overstocking.
- Work closely with other departments (e.g., Maintenance, Quality Assurance, Engineering, and Logistics) to ensure smooth operations and resolve cross-functional issues.
- Manage shift operations, including coordinating shift handovers, ensuring smooth transitions, and monitoring performance across shifts.
- Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulations, and quality standards like ISO 9001 or others that apply to the manufacturing process.
- Regularly evaluate employee performance, provide constructive feedback, and implement action plans for improvement or recognition.
- Monitor production costs and implement cost-saving measures, such as reducing scrap, optimizing material usage, and improving machine uptime.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing or industrial setting, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on knowledge of production machinery, including extrusion and grinding systems.
- Working knowledge of safety practices, forklift operations, and material handling processes.
- Proficient in production planning, root cause analysis, and reporting using ERP or MES systems.
- Familiarity with quality systems such as ISO 9001 and basic statistical process control (SPC).
Leadership
- Will be required to lead a manufacturing focused team ranging from 10 to 40 members. This team will compromise of general laborers, machine operators and powered-industrial truck users.
Technical Skills
Manufacturing Process Knowledge
- Strong understanding of machining, extrusion, grinding, assembly, or recycling processes, depending on the operation.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and process flow diagrams.
Mechanical Aptitude
- Familiarity with the operation and basic troubleshooting of production machinery, such as extruders, grinders, conveyors, etc.
- Understanding of mechanical components (bearings, belts, gearboxes, etc.) to communicate effectively with maintenance teams.
Process Improvement Tools
- Practical knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, 5S, Kaizen, and Six Sigma principles.
- Ability to lead continuous improvement initiatives and reduce downtime or scrap rates.
Quality Control & Assurance
- Understanding of quality systems (e.g., ISO 9001, SPC, control plans).
- Ability to inspect or guide inspection processes and handle non-conformance issues.
Workforce & Production Planning
- Proficiency in production scheduling, work order management, and resource allocation.
- Experience using ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, etc.) or MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems).
Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Knowledge
- Working knowledge of OSHA standards, machine guarding, PPE requirements, and forklift safety.
- Conduct or support safety audits, incident investigations, and compliance training.
Data Analysis & Reporting
- Ability to analyze production data (e.g., OEE, cycle time, downtime, scrap rates).
- Use of tools like Excel, Power BI, or ERP reporting features to track KPIs and drive decisions.
Basic Electrical or Automation Knowledge (Optional but Valuable)
- Awareness of basic PLC operation, sensors, and automation systems is useful for interfacing with maintenance or engineering support.
