Job description

Farmhouse Pottery is seeking a dedicated Production Pottery Kiln Technician to join our team. This role is crucial in managing the firing of our ceramics to ensure the highest quality of finished products. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of kiln operation, maintenance, and safety, along with a keen attention to detail in monitoring the firing process.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and operate kilns for the firing process of ceramic products according to established schedules and protocols.
  • Set, adjust, and control kiln schedules to optimize firing cycles for various types of clay and glaze.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on kilns, ensuring they are operating safely and efficiently.
  • Conduct regular inspections of kiln operations and products being fired, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Assist in the daily loading and unloading of kilns, ensuring proper placement and weight distribution for optimal results.
  • Keep accurate records of kiln firings, including temperature logs and production schedules.
  • Collaborate with the production team to coordinate kiln schedules with production demands.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts to enhance kiln operation and production processes.
  • Maintain clean and organized workspaces, including kiln areas and storage for kiln-related tools and supplies.

Requirements:

  • Experience in kiln operation and pottery firing is highly preferred - experience with Blaauw kilns is a plus.
  • Understanding of ceramic materials, firing processes, and kiln safety practices.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to perform routine maintenance on kilns.
  • Attention to detail, with the ability to maintain accurate records and logs.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with team members and communicate clearly.
  • Physical ability to lift and move materials, including heavy kiln shelves and pottery pieces.
  • Reliable and punctual, with a strong work ethic.
  • Willingness to follow safety protocols and industry best practices.
  • Flexibility to work varying shifts as needed based on production schedules.
