Job summary

voestalpine Railway Systems Nortrak Canada in Thorold, Ontario, seeks a Production Manager to direct and lead plant operations, ensuring safety, quality, and on-time delivery. PURPOSE OF POSITION

Reporting directly to the Plant Manager, the Production Manager is responsible for directing and leading the plant supervision in all operations departments.This role will also be responsible for managing the production requirements to meet the scheduled monthly volume/output targets while efficiently and effectively managing the allotted plant resources.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES
SAFETY
  • Promotes safety and ensures that employees perform their tasks in a safe manner, which complies with applicable regulations and accepted best practices.
QUALITY
  • Ensure production of quality trackwork according to the established work procedures and product specifications as evidenced by a continually declining number of CARs and a reduction in the cost of quality year over year.
  • Direct and motivate the shop supervisors and hourly workers with high emphasis placed on the quality of our product.
  • Responsible for the layout and handling of the complete MRP system.
ON-TIME DELIVERY
  • Meets customer delivery targets by effectively planning and executing production within the allotted material and labor requirements.
  • Ensures the production planners have scheduled the correct type of work and sufficient volume in order to make the plant as effective as possible while still maintaining customer-required deliveries.
COST
  • Increases productivity by improving manufacturing processes and control of shop consumables, overtime and waste.
  • Lower the hourly shop charge-out rate by reducing shop consumables, overtime and increasing our direct job charged percentage.
  • Monitor, control and reduce our WIP inventory levels by producing the exact quantity of product that is required for a specific order.
  • Assist with estimating by supplying labor costs and anticipated delivery.
PEOPLE
  • Develops supervisors and other direct reports through coaching, mentoring and providing training opportunities.
  • Liaises with Engineering, Supervisors and Logistics in the creation of manufacturing procedures. Liaise with the Quality Assurance Department to ensure quality is built into our product.
  • Promote a high degree of plant morale and interplant cooperation with our sister plants.
  • Work alongside with Human Resources to ensure adequate manpower to achieve production goals, ensuring all plant rules are complied with and the attendance of employees and initiating disciplinary action when warranted.
  • Champion, model and lead our Nortrak Blue culture and values.
ENVIRONMENTAL
  • Adhere to Nortrak's Environmental Procedures, Practices and Policies.

QUALITIFCATIONS
EDUCATION
  • Post-Secondary education with diploma or degree in Manufacturing / Operations related field is preferred.
FIELD OF EXPERIENCE
  • Must have experience with manufacturing processes.
  • Must be experienced in most or all of the following areas: LEAN principles and methodology, safety compliance, budget planning and cost control, profit and loss statements, and quality control management.
  • Candidate must possess experience managing and leading a team including experience in staffing, training and development, coaching, and performance management.
  • At least three (3) years’ experience in a supervisory level position and managing a diverse team.
  • Should be able to understand basic accounting/budgeting concepts.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills are required.
  • Must possess excellent negotiations, interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Computer literate including Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets.SAP knowledge and/or experience would be an asset.
PHYSCIAL DEMANDS
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer; occasional standing and walking for your scheduled shift.
  • Must remain stationary for extended periods and move throughout the building to access files.
  • Must work effectively in a noisy environment.
  • Site inspections required to identify and address safety concerns.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment or objects up to 10 pounds occasionally.
  • Visual requirements include close, distance, colour, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasional travel required, involving walking, standing, sitting, and driving for varying durations.
  • Frequent use of hands and arms for dialing phones and using a computer mouse.
