Job description

As St. Louis’s longest-running professional theater company devoted solely to theater for youth and families, MTC creates programs on stage and in schools that have an outsized impact on the future of children in our region – empowering them to reach their full potential, providing them with opportunities to build empathy, and inspiring each of them to discover their own unique voice.

This role primarily works regular office hours, while being present in person at student matinees and occasional school touring venues to support the needs of young people and teachers experiencing MTC’s programs. Occasional evening and weekend responsibilities may be connected to public performances, special events, or board meetings. Compensation is $40,000 annually, including a medical insurance plan (MTC pays 80%, employee pays 20%), dental and vision plans, and a match of up to 3% of salary towards employee contributions to a SIMPLE IRA retirement fund. The intended start date for this position is June 30.

BROAD FUNCTION:
Participate as a key member of the MTC team in support of the mission and strategic plans of Metro Theater Company, working closely with Artistic Director to set specific short and long-term goals and priorities in support of the department. Work with the Artistic Producer (AP) to form a self-directed, effective and efficient team covering all aspects of production each season. Work with key staff to support scheduling and communication around programming goals across the organization. Participate in all aspects of producing with a focus on stage and production managementt, scheduling, smooth production communication systems, and support of production related community events.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Create and maintain Master MTC Calendar and Production Department Calendars; Assist in facilitating cross-departmental calendars (production calendar, education calendar, marketing deadlines, etc.).
  • Anticipate, communicate, and follow up with designers, directors, production staff and others to ensure that all Production Calendar deadlines are met; schedule all production meetings;
  • Provide support to AP in collecting, documenting and maintaining records of all production activity; maintain a comprehensive and uniform digital show archive; improve current show archive and reporting systems;
  • Serve as MTC Production Stage Manager, facilitating artist and staff collaboration and communication including but not limited to hiring and supporting jobbed-in stage managers, actors, technicians, designers, and crew members; facilitating communication with design teams and cross-departmental staff; with AP, coordinate cross-departmental calendar to facilitate production needs not related to the work on stage (interviews, promotional events, etc.); support all artistic/production activities (performances, new work development, touring, etc)
  • Coordinate and assist with accounting activities as appropriate; create and oversee budget planning and management for the department
  • Advise Artistic Director and Managing Director on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show or event
  • Ensure that invoices for payment and/or receipts for disbursement, with respect to authorized expenditures, are promptly submitted being proficient and efficient with all expenditures made within the budget
  • Organize and catalogue all items in MTC production storage; develop systems for maintaining a clean and orderly studio space throughout the season; serve as MTC point of contact for rentals of production items
  • Assist in coordinating production aspects of special events, such as the Annual Benefit Gala, support cross-departmental projects as needed
  • Participate in all aspects of production including, but not limited to support of technical and design teams through building, research, maintenance and repair during productions; strike and post-mortem of technical and production systems
  • Provide administrative support to Artistic Director and production team as needed
  • Provide cross-departmental support, including support of Education programming, as needed
  • Oversee and implement the company’s production elements, including build, paint, props, maintenance and strike
  • Determine the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances in advance of production dates
  • Recruit, manage and retain stagehands and overtire tech personnel
  • Ensure smooth operation of the technical aspects of all productions
  • Purchase, lease and/or borrow equipment as needed, within specified budgetary limits
  • Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; perform preventive maintenance on equipment, including the company vehicle
  • Develop, implement and monitor policies to ensure a safe work environment in the back stage and stage areas
  • Serve as Building Supervisor after normal hours of operation, or during assigned productions and rental events; oversee assignment and distribution of building keys and security codes to production staff
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local designers, builders, & colleges with technical training programs

  • Minimum two or more years of experience in professional theatre
