Position Overview

Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Production Manager is responsible for overseeing daily structural steel fabrication operations, ensuring efficient production of joists, beams, columns, and trusses while maintaining quality standards and meeting project timelines. This role requires expertise in structural steel fabrication processes, AWS D1.1 welding codes, and CNC cutting technologies.

Key Responsibilities

Operations Management

  • Direct daily fabrication operations across fitting, welding, priming, and finishing processes
  • Manage production schedules and optimize workflow for joists, beams, columns, and trusses
  • Oversee and provide leadership to shift-based production supervisors and fabrication leads
  • Implement AISC/AWS-compliant fabrication practices to meet client and project demands
  • Coordinate with maintenance, quality, supply chain, and engineering teams to identify and resolve production bottlenecks

Performance Monitoring & Improvement

  • Analyze key production metrics including OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness), first-pass yield, and defect rates
  • Develop and drive process improvements to enhance productivity and quality
  • Ensure efficient resource utilization including workforce planning, equipment usage, and raw material inventory
  • Maintain production documentation and ensure compliance with industry standards

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Foster collaboration across fabrication, quality, and logistics departments
  • Ensure on-time project deliveries through effective coordination with all stakeholders
  • Participate in production planning meetings and contribute to strategic business decisions
  • Lead and mentor production team members to promote skill development and operational excellence

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • 5+ years of experience in structural steel fabrication with at least 3 years in a supervisory role
  • Proven track record of managing high-volume manufacturing operations

Technical Knowledge

  • Expertise in structural steel fabrication processes and techniques
  • In-depth knowledge of AWS D1.1 welding codes and standards
  • Proficiency with CNC cutting technologies and modern fabrication equipment
  • Understanding of AISC standards and quality control processes

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong leadership and team management capabilities
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Effective communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies
  • Ability to read and interpret structural drawings and specifications

Working Conditions

  • Manufacturing environment with exposure to typical fabrication shop conditions
  • May require standing for extended periods and moving through production areas
  • Some physical requirements including ability to wear required PPE
  • May require occasional overtime to meet production demands
