Role Overview:

PIC, a Genus PLC company, has an exciting opportunity. We are looking for a Production Manager who is responsible for planning and directing all phases of breeding, farrowing & wean to finish production at one of the genetic nucleus farms. This role sets production schedules based on product introduction, equipment efficiency, materials supply, staffing resources and volume required to meet demand and to ensure maximum production quantity and quality.

The successful candidate has the ability to work in a culturally diverse, fast-paced environment and establish priorities, meet deadlines & maintain accuracy. The candidate can work autonomously as well as collaboratively across functional teams while analyzing and problem solving and possesses strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.


The position is based at the Atlas facility in Carlyle, Saskatchewan.

You Will:
  • Be accountable for the performance and results of a team
  • Manage a generally homogeneous team of professionals and/or supervisors
  • Adapt departmental plans and priorities to address resource and meet service and/or operational challenges
  • Impact the level of service and the team’s ability to meet quality, volume, and timeliness objectives
  • Conduct all people management responsibilities for direct reports, including but not limited to labor management, performance management, recruitment and training and development
  • Ensure appropriate staff training and on-boarding of new employees
  • Create action plans to ensure the achievement of reproductive key performance indicators on a weekly, monthly, and annual basis
  • Assist in the development of, as well as deliver, the agreed upon budget area of responsibility which includes:
    • Execution of both feeding practices and budgeted feed volumes on a monthly and annual basis;
    • Achieve or exceed production targets;
    • Order feed and supplies; and
    • Capital and operating expenditures/projects.
  • Coordinate animal flows and weekly volume objective by genetic line
  • Be responsible for the daily schedule of activities in semen collection and processing
  • Collaborate with cross company departments, such as Human Resources, Genetic Services, Health Assurance and Product Development
  • Execute health management programs and health reporting functions across the area of responsibility
  • Maintain record keeping within all software platforms to ensure records are fully updated on a weekly basis
  • Ensure an area of responsibility is accomplishing the following:
    • Adherence to the Company’s Safety Program requirements and guidelines;
    • Adhere to biosecurity protocols;
    • Compliance of all company policies, procedures, and guidelines;
    • Willingness to change plans as needed;
  • Cleanliness and sanitation of the farm;
  • Accurate and timely production information and records;
  • Ensure timely treatment of sick animals with a variety of pharmaceuticals as needed; and
  • Compliance with all environmental laws and procedures
  • Ensure adherence to the Company’s animal care policies and procedures including providing a physical environment that meets the animal’s needs, providing access to adequate water and high quality feed, providing humane treatment of the animals, providing identification and appropriate treatment of animals in need of health care and following the guidelines for euthanasia
  • Direct and prioritize maintenance personnel as it relates to their allocated time in the facility
  • Provide technical guidance to employees, colleagues and/or customers
  • Travel approximately 15% (domestically & internationally)
  • Familiarity with CPE (Canadian Pork Excellence)
Requirements:
  • A university degree, preferably in an animal science field
  • A minimum of 12 months of proven experience and results in swine production, including an in-depth understanding of concepts, theories and principles in animal production and basic knowledge of other disciplines/departments
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other relevant software applications; ability to learn new software programs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge & understanding of the Canadian Pork Excellence (CPE) standards & principles
