Changing the world, one book at a time.

As a team of dedicated book-loving professionals, we discover, shape, and share content that nurtures thoughts, dreams, and conversations around the globe, ensuring that new and established voices are heard.

We are looking for a Production Editor to join Tundra Book Group, Penguin Random House Canada.

Do you have a passion for children’s books and a particular interest in the production of illustrated books? Are you self-motivated, able to juggle multiple deadlines, manage projects, and have a keen eye for detail work? If you answered yes to these questions, consider joining the Tundra Book Group team as we continue to write new chapters of Penguin Random House Canada’s culture.

Your contribution to the story:

At Tundra , we are dedicated to the art of story. For more than 50 years, we have published award-winning books that stand out on shelves around the world and tell stories that spark imaginations, tickle funny bones, warm hearts, and delight readers of all ages. We pride ourselves on our high-quality books and our creator-centric approach, and we strive to maintain excellence in all aspects of our publishing. Reporting to the Senior Managing Editor of Tundra Book Group, you will work alongside other members of the Tundra team to review content for our four imprints (Tundra Books, Swift Water, Puffin Canada, and Penguin Teen Canada). We are looking for someone located within commuting distance of our Toronto office, who will take on a wide variety of tasks. As part of the Tundra publishing division, an interest in developing editorial skills, a curiosity to learn more about the children’s book industry, and an enthusiasm to support our editorial team and creators are essential.

What you’ll do:

  • Oversee select frontlist books (primarily picture books, graphic novels, and other illustrated books) from first typeset pages through to softproofs (including copyediting, proofreading, reviewing page layouts), ensuring books are of the highest quality and ready for press.
  • Circulate typeset pages to authors and illustrators and to editors and designers for review, incorporate all feedback and resolve any queries.
  • Project-manage assigned books , including revising and maintaining project schedules and communicating proactively with the Senior Managing Editor and Project Editor to ensure each project is on track. Work collaboratively to troubleshoot solutions to any issues.
  • Create Profit and Loss (P&L) sheets, handle cost management for assigned books and support the Senior Managing Editor with additional P&Ls as needed.
  • Update title/specifications information and ensure data integrity for each season’s assigned books prior to publication.
  • Assist the Senior Managing Editor with coordinating freelance projects by scheduling and booking freelance copyeditors and proofreaders.
  • Handle reprint titles of Tundra Book Group’s extensive backlist (creating reprint P&Ls, checking files, making corrections, reviewing/approving changes).

Experience and knowledge you’ll bring (qualifications):

  • Two years of education or experience in children’s book publishing or a related field in an editorial or production-editorial capacity.
  • Superb copyediting and proofreading skills, with an in-depth knowledge of markup tools and standards in Adobe Acrobat, proficiency with the Chicago Manual of Style, and the capacity to adjust and learn additional editorial standards such as Gregory Younging's Elements of Indigenous Style.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments, working well under pressure, and consistently meeting tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment without sacrificing quality.
  • A proactive and efficient approach to problem solving.
  • Sound knowledge of the publishing industry, with a strong understanding of best practices in design and copy layout, file management, production process, and printing conventions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to work efficiently, both independently and as part of a team that spans all levels of the organization.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Pro and experience using collaborative tools such as Teams, Asana, etc.
  • An inclusive approach to your work, supported by cultural competency and a proven ability to collaborate with people from across a wide range of diverse backgrounds.
  • A proactive mindset coupled with an ability to work both independently and as part of a larger team.
  • Enhanced knowledge, awareness, and experience with the culture and history of any community that has faced marginalization is considered a plus.
  • Excellent relationship management and inclusion skills shown through a proven ability to work across a range of collaborators, including authors and illustrators from diverse backgrounds.
  • And of course, a love for books!

We are actively seeking to add team members from communities with lived experiences of marginalization and underrepresentation. We respect and value each individual and are committed to fostering a diverse team and a culture of belonging. If you identify as Black, Indigenous, a person of colour, a member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community or another marginalized group, we strongly encourage you to apply.

This role will work at least three days per week from our Toronto office located at 320 Front Street West. Candidates residing within commuting distance of Toronto will be given preference.

To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume by Thursday May 15th 2025. We appreciate the interest of all applicants; however, only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
