Church Publishing Incorporated (CPI) was founded in 1918 as the Church Hymnal Corporation, a nonprofit affiliate of the Church Pension Group. Today, CPI's professionals produce about 50 new books and resources each year, and manage a portfolio of more than 2,600 active products, many sold worldwide.

The Production Editor, reporting to the Production Director, supports the day-to-day production of CPI's multi-market publishing program, with a specialization in general trade production held to industry standards. The Production Editor will manage CPI's trade publishing end-to-end workflows and work to ensure optimum production cost savings across all formats. Working with the Director and Sr. Production Lead, the Production Editor participates in continuous improvement efforts and maintains the pace of the production and publication processes to meet schedules and targets.

The Production Editor is a confident and highly organized self-starter who can succeed in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate excellent attention to detail with the ability to manage their own workload while meeting competing deadlines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Launch trade publishing workflows and maintain production processes along with industry standards
  • Manage the production of trade front list titles from transmitted manuscript through production to bound book and distribution
  • Ensure manuscripts, artwork, permissions, and supporting files entering production meet strict publication requirements and quality standards
  • Establish freelancer relationships and control production costs through vendor negotiations across all production tasks
  • Provide industry standard guidance to Editorial on trade covers and interior designs
  • Offer front list authors support and management on the production process, expediting solutions as needed to ensure on-time publication
  • Review and verify all product metadata in all CPI and vendor systems
  • Supervise vendor expenses against P&Ls, investigate and address discrepancies, track savings, and process invoices through submission and approval for payment
  • Coordinate calendar program and some front list title reprints through the production process
  • Oversee church bulletin program for each season, engaging with vendors, communicating with printers, and working with the Director and Editorial to prepare changes per season
  • Troubleshoot routine production issues, providing input to stakeholders, and escalate issues when appropriate
  • File cataloging-in-publication data upon transmittal of a book and copyright information with the Library of Congress upon publication
  • Attend production-related meetings, providing status reports and production details
  • Undertake special projects as directed by management
  • Effective performance requires regular and effective in-person, on-site interaction with colleagues and external vendors for relationship building, collaboration, and approval of physical materials
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Expert skills in Microsoft Office 360 and Adobe Acrobat, with strong familiarity with meeting tools (e.g., Zoom and Microsoft Teams)
  • Intermediate/Expert skills and familiarity with CMS systems like Title Management by Firebrand and SharePoint, along with accounting interfaces
  • Expert project management skills and problem-solving techniques
  • Understanding of financial procedures and invoice processing
  • Strong vendor and freelance relationships in trade publishing
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Collegial and collaborative working style
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • BA/BS or a combination of education and experience
  • 4+ years relevant function and organization experience
  • 6+ years in print and electronic production operations with an interest in digital production
  • Experience in trade production
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Extensive use of a computer keyboard is required to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Currently a hybrid work environment, requiring in-office presence in CPG's office Tuesdays through Thursdays, with flexibility for remote work on Mondays and Fridays. Salary Range: $64,000 - $80,000
