Reports to: Director, New Product Development

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Oversee the design and development of innovative products specific to the Grills division, ensuring they meet technical specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage the product development lifecycle from ideation to production, including benchmarking, concept development, prototyping, testing, and final design.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of new products into manufacturing processes.
  • Ensure product development complies with government standards and company quality assurance requirements.
  • Hire, train, and lead a team of engineers, designers, and technical associates to fulfill the department’s responsibilities.
  • Coordinate product testing, methods, reports, and maintenance to meet national standards and third-party compliance.
  • Develop and maintain engineering and inspection acceptance criteria, testing procedures, reports, and maintenance documentation.
  • Review and approve engineering change notices, product improvement ideas, product and parts costs, patents for the company and competitors’ products.
  • Plan and manage product projects, including third-party testing and laboratory certification costs.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes impacting products.
  • Drive innovation by identifying and implementing new technologies, materials, and processes.
  • Develop and maintain CAD/CAM, ERP, and publishing software and files related to R&D, interfacing with other company departments.
  • Prepare correspondence, testing documentation, and information for government grants and tax credits.
  • Inspect R&D activities for safety and ensure compliance with health and safety directives.

Education and Experience:

  • University Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in a manufacturing facility, demonstrating increased responsibility in developing household consumer products or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in the grills industry is a strong asset.
  • Professional Engineering (P. Eng) designation or registration with the Province of Ontario or equivalent is required.
  • Knowledge of ERP and CAD software.

Specialized Skills:

  • Knowledge of product testing and national safety standards with third-party certification.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, 5S, and related management tools.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, materials selection, and product testing methodologies.

Leadership & Management Skills:

  • Ability to lead and inspire engineering and technical teams.
  • Excellent project management skills, with a track record of delivering projects on time and within budget.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
