Job summary

The Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Centre Inc. in Saskatoon is seeking an entry-level technician to provide hands-on support for product development, sensory evaluation, analytical testing, and pilot-plant activities under the direction of the Product Development Specialist and Director.

The role involves benchtop formulation work, sample preparation, following protocols, operating lab and pilot-plant equipment, and recording results.

Qualifications

  • This is an entry-level position; recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with benchtop formulations, product prototypes, and processing trials.
  • Prepare ingredients, materials, equipment, and samples required for project activities.
  • Follow formulation sheets, processing procedures, sensory protocols, and assigned project instructions.
  • Operate, assemble, disassemble, clean, and sanitize laboratory, kitchen, and pilot-plant equipment.
  • Conduct routine analytical tests, including pH, water activity, moisture, Brix, yield, color, viscosity, and texture, as required.
  • Prepare, code, randomize, and serve samples for sensory evaluations.
  • Accurately record formulations, processing conditions, analytical results, and observations related to appearance, aroma, flavour, and texture.
  • Assist with sample preparation and product monitoring.
  • Communicate with the team regarding sample, ingredient, material, and equipment requirements.
  • Organize ingredients, samples, project files, equipment, and consumable supplies.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all client and project information.
  • Follow food safety, quality, allergen-control, and workplace-safety procedures.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with clients and coworkers.
  • Be able to lift up to 20 kg and stand for up to six hours per day.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
