Work at CBC / Radio-Canada

At CBC / Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. Our successes and accomplishments are driven by embodying and upholding values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness and relevance.

This role requires full time on site presence.

Your role

CBC Yukon has an amazing opportunity in Whitehorse. We’re looking for an experienced journalist to help lead a team that drives local, innovative storytelling on audio, digital, video and social platforms. As a producer assigned primarily to CBC Yukon’s audio-radio shows, your central role is programming our three daily shows, working with dedicated hosts, an associate producer and reporters. You’ll assign, edit and line up segments on Yukon Morning, Midday Cafe and Airplay.

You will lead daily team meetings, coordinate story chases, make decisions on audio treatments, write scripts, conduct interviews and coordinate with News, Digital and Video Producers and reporters across the North and across Canada.

You will have the opportunity to initiate ideas and projects to engage, serve and grow our audiences by reflecting and amplifying complex Northern stories. There will be latitude for initiative and creativity while adhering to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, standards, and practices.

Working with an editorial leadership team led by CBC Yukon’s Executive Producer, you’ll collaborate with program staff to effectively, efficiently, and empathetically cover stories and issues affecting our diverse audience across the Yukon.

Can you see yourself here?

You have a deep and demonstrated understanding of broadcast journalism, responsive, relevant news coverage, digital roll outs and strategic social media storytelling. You’re also keen to consider new ways of telling stories on established and emerging platforms. You understand the role of public media in connecting with and building a strong, flourishing local community.

You’re an excellent writer, and all-round communicator. You also have strong vetting skills. You’re insatiably curious, brimming with initiative. You work quickly, thoughtfully and collaboratively. You demonstrate flexibility and adaptability.

You’re also a confident, compassionate, and inclusive leader. You inspire people to bring out their best. You’ve got experience mentoring, coaching and working alongside a team that brings a broad range of experience, skills and interests.

You’re a great planner and deft organizer who can work in harmony with a small team in a high-pressure, tight-deadline environment from pitch, to gathering, to roll out.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  1. A relevant post-secondary degree or equivalent years of experience.
  2. Minimum of 5 years relevant experience of which 3 must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry.
  3. Strong understanding of the Yukon’s diverse social, political and cultural landscape.
  4. Demonstrated experience in leading a team or unit.
  5. Experience in gathering sound and voices and producing audio segments for radio broadcasts.
  6. Experience in producing daily current affairs-driven shows.
  7. Demonstrated understanding of digital, video and mobile platforms.
  8. Superior editorial decision making, critical thinking and listening skills.
  9. A thorough knowledge of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  10. Demonstrated ability to exercise quick, decisive and strong editorial judgment.
  11. Highly developed vetting skills.
  12. Ability to communicate effectively and cooperatively.
  13. Highly developed interpersonal skills.
  14. Highly developed organizational skills.
  15. Excellent editing/production skills in Dalet and other audio editing software.
  16. Ability to work independently and also participate as a member of a production team.
  17. A valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC / Radio-Canada’s insurance company.

As required, you will perform the following tasks:

  1. Coordinate resources and coverage plans for daily content creation, special projects, series, remote broadcasts and streaming content with a focus on CBC Yukon’s three daily audio shows.
  2. Lead story meetings.
  3. Participate in the preparation of content for local, regional and national audiences, including assigning, researching, gathering, writing and editing.
  4. Write, vet and review scripts and question lines or the shows.
  5. Aid in the critical analysis around story selections, treatment and placement, and provide feedback on the same.
  6. Work with hosts to support best delivery and performance.
  7. Frequently contact newsmakers, organizations and community groups to develop a database of ideas for stories and/or programming specials.
  8. Provide regular feedback and coaching to experienced and developing journalists.

Ability to work flexible hours and overtime is required.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
