Job summary

Innophos is seeking a Process/Project Engineer in Port Maitland, Canada. You will develop, estimate, plan, and execute process projects, while improving plant performance and reliability. Role includes PFD/P&ID work, equipment calculations, and leadership of project teams.

Responsibilities include cost estimation, start-up support, and collaboration with maintenance. Must have chemical engineering background and 3+ years in a GMP/FDA environment; relocation within commuting distance preferred.

Job description

The Process/Project Engineer is primarily responsible for project development, estimation, planning, and execution. In addition, they are responsible for conducting engineering studies concerning the improvement of various aspects of the manufacturing processes and equipment – product quality, reliability, yield, pollution control, work environment, and energyconservation. This engineer will be responsible for most PFD and material balance work as well as basic P&ID development. They shall be involved with any process or product development work that is project related. They will also develop process metrics to evaluate and improve plant performance, provide start-up assistance, assist maintenance employees, troubleshooting, etc.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides 24/7 technical and general supervisory support to any contractors or plant personnel involved with their projects
  • Provides material balances, PFDs, P&IDs, and equipment calculations for all projects at Port Maitland. If outside expertise is needed, this engineer will coordinate and review the necessary outside services
  • Serves as project manager on projects. Responsible for the development, implementation, and management of any projects assigned to them as their project. Supervise plant personnel and contractors and be responsible for the conduct and work product of the contractors performing on their project
  • Works on projects related to key environmental and sustainability programs
  • Provide scope, cost estimation, request capital money, supervise fieldwork and conduct commissioning
  • Support activities in the maintenance department
  • Responsible for improving integrity and reliability of equipment
  • Provide technical leadership for employees in implementing long term solutions to recurrent problems
  • Responsible for the financial performance of assigned projects as well as all associated paperwork
  • Studies methods in current use to do process calculations and makes improvements and/or develops new methods as needed
  • Carry out troubleshooting activities and investigate special production problems in the existing manufacturing plants
  • Completes all pertinent safety reviews for project and process changes
  • Prepare sections of operating manuals as needed for project start-up or process changes
  • Establish and maintain a good working relationship with equipment vendors, contractors, and plant personnel as necessary to carry out job functions
  • Size and design process equipment, vessels, piping, ductwork, and process control systems
  • Prepare equipment and contractor specifications, write requests for quotes, evaluate bids, and prepare purchase orders
  • Establish and maintain a complete up-to-date unit by unit process record in the form of P&IDs
  • Study and improve process conditions
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering – Chemical; P Eng. preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in chemical or GMP and/or FDA facility or experience working in an industrial environment
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must reside within reasonable commuting distance to the plant or are planning to relocate prior to starting work
  • A good working knowledge of product equipment and processes and safety measures that are unique and necessary in chemical manufacturing
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents
  • Ability to work with limited supervision, being a self -starter, and having a questioning attitude is a key part of this job
  • Knowledge of industrial maintenance techniques, understanding of good engineering and safety practices
  • Ability to manage budget and to estimate costs related to various projects
  • Ability to manage and execute capital projects
  • Strong teamwork skills to collaborate with colleagues and to support the maintenance teams
Environmental and/or Physical Requirements
  • Work is in an office and plant manufacturing setting, one location
  • Some exposure to outdoor activity
  • Location has stairs, walking to different areas of the site, some occasional lifting, squatting, bending

The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limited to education, specific skills, licenses and certifications, experience, and training.
