Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Refining/Upgrading heavy oil process operations.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and 3rd Class Power Engineering Certificate.

Process Operator - Sulphur Recovery and Utilities

Position Summary:

As an integral member of the Refinery Operations team, the Process Operator will have a strong background in Refinery/Upgrader operation and must understand the unit functionality and design constraints, including operability and maintainability criteria of the unit specific equipment.

Process Operators will initially work an onboarding day shift schedule transitioning onto a 12-hour, rotating, day/night.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures effective operation of the refinery process units for the safe and efficient operation of the plant;
  • Effectively troubleshoot plant problems taking proactive/preventative/corrective actions to avoid equipment or system failures and to prevent injury to people and the environment;
  • Makes recommendations to improve the reliability, safety and quality of plant operations;
  • Maintains daily shift operating logs and performs proper shift handover;
  • Performs daily operating rounds and routines;
  • Performs minor maintenance to unit equipment;
  • Issues work permits to maintenance for equipment repairs and alterations;
  • Coaches and mentors other crew members with respect to plant operations and procedures;
  • As part of the on-shift Emergency Response Team, responds to plant emergencies;
  • Supports the Shift Team Lead in the areas of safety, team development, training, emergency response;
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Understands, creates and maintains a visible commitment to process and personal safety, as well as the safety of others; adheres to NWR’s Core Competencies to drive results and a high performing culture;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Refining/Upgrading heavy oil process operations (Sulphur Recovery & Utilities preferred);
  • Control Room Operator/Panel experience would be considered an asset – Delta V or Honeywell;
  • Must possess a 3rd Class Power Engineering Certificate. Preference given to those with a minimum 2nd class Power Engineering;
  • Team player: willing to continuously and proactively collaborate, share, and seek information and guidance;
  • Must possess a valid driver's license;
  • Some travel, overtime and after-hours coverage required;
  • Willing to work a rotating shift schedule including nights, weekends, holidays and be on-call to respond to emergencies when required;
  • Able to climb ladders and stairs, work at heights and in confined spaces;
  • Willing to work outdoors in inclement weather;
  • Using safe lifting techniques, able to lift and carry 20 kg from ground to waist level;
  • Ability to work safely wearing a respirator or Self-contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA); strong, effective procedure writing;
  • Good understanding of operability, maintainability and reliability concepts and applications; good understanding of Fundamentals of Firefighting and Emergency Response;
  • Ability to manage task assignments within a matrix organization;
  • Effective communicator - verbally and written; ability to establish clear goals and manage desired outcomes;
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
