Job summary

The City of Hamilton is seeking a dedicated Full-Time Probationary Firefighter to perform fire ground operations, rescue work, medical assistance and public safety duties. You will respond to a variety of emergencies, comply with health and safety regulations, and participate in public fire prevention education.

Requirements include Grade 12, a valid Ontario DZ licence, Standard First Aid with CPR Level C, and the ability to work rotating shifts.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or approved equivalent.
• Must be able to work in a highly structured environment and follow Hamilton Fire Department policies.
• Able to learn extinguishing, prevention and rescue techniques.
• Ability to inspect and maintain apparatus and equipment.
• English communication skills (oral and written).
• Ability to stay calm and act decisively in emergencies.
• Physically capable of arduous work and operating firefighting equipment.
• General knowledge of hazardous materials and life safety systems.
• Work in confined spaces or high places.
• Current Standard First Aid with CPR Level C certification.
• Valid Ontario Class DZ Driver’s Licence with zero demerit points.
• Available to work rotating shifts.

Responsibilities

• Search for and rescue individuals, evacuate and protect lives and property.
• Extinguish fires and control incidents following safety procedures.
• Provide first aid and stabilize patients for transport.
• Respond to medical calls, carbon monoxide alarms, crashes, gas leaks, and other emergencies.
• Inspect equipment and report deficiencies promptly.
• Deliver public fire prevention information and attract community engagement.
• Operate radios, computers and other communications devices as required.
• Develop pre-fire plans with structural surveys and hazard identification.
• Perform station duties and maintain clean, organized facilities.
• Support health and safety compliance and related documentation.
