BCI is seeking an outstanding Principal to join its Direct Private Equity program located at BCI’s Victoria office. BCI’s Direct Private Equity program is organized by sector specialty, and this opportunity will be within its Global Business Services & Consumer sector team.

BCI is headquartered in Victoria, British Columbia and its private equity team is based in Victoria, New York City, and its newly established presence in London.
BCI’s Private Equity program manages a ~C$31 billion global portfolio, with an emphasis on direct investments. We seek to invest ~US$100-500+ million per transaction for ~20-100% equity ownership in market-leading companies with sustainable competitive advantages and multiple value creation opportunities. BCI Private Equity invests directly and often alongside strategic partners with deep sector expertise across our targeted sectors including Financial Services, Business Services, Consumer, TMT, Healthcare, and Industrials. We secure meaningful governance / board positions which underpin our active role in value creation from deal origination through exit.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Principals are integral deal team members at BCI, responsible for executing against a range of investment-related priorities as well as mentoring and managing Associates and Analysts. Investment-related responsibilities including executing and managing direct private equity investments as well as select fund commitments with strategic partners. This includes investment research and strategy development, analysis of investment opportunities, execution of due diligence workstreams, performance monitoring, and investment-related value-creation initiatives, such as follow-on M&A, financings, and other strategic priorities.
Principals are expected to build collaborative relationships with a range of stakeholders including deal team leaders, junior team professionals, strategic partners, portfolio company executives and board members. Internally, Principals develop and communicate independent insights with respect to investment opportunities under evaluation, as well as monitoring the ongoing performance of BCI’s private equity investments. Above all else, the Principal will bring a long-term value investing mindset with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

KEY REQUIREMENTS
4-7 years of relevant experience in areas such as private equity, investment banking, strategy consulting and corporate development, or equivalent experience
Strong collaboration and communication skills
Strategic acumen and intellectual curiosity / flexibility, underpinned by deep technical rigour
Insights that inform investment decisioning and commercial judgment
Demonstrated people leadership and development
Ability to effectively manage projects under pressure and within tight deadlines
Ability to function both independently and as part of a high-performance team
Beyond an undergraduate degree, an advanced degree, such as MBA or JD, will be viewed favourably. Additional designations, including Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and / or CA / CPA are also highly valued.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Investment Analysis and Execution
Leading the preliminary analysis of investment opportunities and recommending pipeline prioritization and resource planning to senior team members
Conducting expert and potential strategic fund partner interviews, participating in management meetings and developing initial views on valuation
Spearheading development of investment theses by identifying investment merits and risks and assessing mitigating factors
Coordinating, completing and / or overseeing various due diligence workstreams with minimal guidance and within the appropriate due diligence framework
Managing interactions and engagements with external advisors as well as with internal stakeholders (i.e., legal, tax, risk, etc.)
Synthesizing findings, key analysis and supporting documents in an organized and documented manner for the broader team and investment committee
Leading the preparation of investment committee materials; coordinating and participating in the investment review process.
Portfolio Monitoring and Oversight
Overseeing tracking and actively evaluating financial performance, execution of value creation initiatives and valuation of portfolio companies versus original investment thesis
Performing ongoing review of changes impacting the company and industry, identifying relevant opportunities and risks and systematically developing objective and rigorous views on the long-term potential of portfolio companies
Coordinating resource allocation to support value creation initiatives and working with portfolio company management teams and / or strategic partners
Supporting portfolio company board directors and observers.
Projects / Ongoing Knowledge
Keeping current with respect to industry and private equity trends
Working on specific projects to enhance team capabilities
Mentoring and training of junior team members
Participating in professional development activities on an ongoing basis
Developing key strategic relationships with strategic partners, consultants / advisors, internal resource groups, etc.
Understanding and ensuring deal team compliance with risk management policies.
WHERE YOU WILLL WORK
Work from our office in Victoria. We are an in-person collaborative organization with the flexibility to work remotely 1 day per week.
SALARY RANGE
BCI offers a competitive total rewards package which includes a performance-based incentive plan, comprehensive health & dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan and paid time off.
The annualized base salary range for this Victoria-based role is CAD $135,000 -$165,000.
The base salary offered will consider a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual’s skill set, level of experience applicable to the role, and consideration to internal equity.
We pay our people competitively in the markets in which we operate and with consideration to internal equity and job structure. We aim for actual pay to be around the median of the market for target or expected levels of performance, and around the upper quartile of the market for excellent performance.
