Position Description

We have been retained by a pioneering climate solutions company seeking an experienced Principal Metallurgist to lead groundbreaking advances in alkalinity extraction technology. This senior technical role is essential to the strategic growth of their innovative ocean-based carbon dioxide removal initiative. Located in Halifax / Dartmouth, you will be at the forefront of developing and refining leaching processes to harness alkalinity from industrial byproducts, significantly impacting global climate restoration efforts.

As the Principal Metallurgist, you will oversee critical research and development activities, translate laboratory successes into scalable engineering solutions, and play a key role in driving intellectual property strategy. You will collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, external labs, and major industry partners, ensuring that our solutions are scientifically robust and commercially viable.

You will also play a critical role in shaping our technology roadmap and establishing strategic credibility with major industrial partners. Success in this role will include the development of validated leachate methodologies for key feedstocks (e.g. slags, fly ash) and the design of a scale-ready bench reactor system within the first 12 months.

Join a team dedicated to innovation and environmental responsibility, contributing directly to global climate action through sustainable technology. If you are an accomplished metallurgist seeking a meaningful role at the intersection of industry and sustainability, we would love to hear from you.

Responsibilities

  • Design and run lab-scale and pilot-ready experimental programs.
  • Collaborate across internal teams and labs to ensure scientific rigor.
  • Support IP development by identifying patentable innovations.
  • Develop reactor designs for bench-scale testing and future scale-up.
  • Define technical criteria for feedstock suitability.
  • Represent the company as a technical expert in industry-facing conversations.
  • Support strategic positioning of proprietary technology with external partners.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in METSIM; familiarity with Aspen, JKSimMet, SysCAD, or IDEAS preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Python, MATLAB, or Excel-based modeling.
  • Demonstrated ability to scale lab processes into operational systems.
  • Experience with solid–liquid separation (e.g. thickeners, filtration).
  • Effective communicator across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented, and comfortable mentoring others.
  • Prior experience working with external labs and industry partners is an asset.
