Our Legal department, which spans the globe, is looking for a legal counsel with diversified legal experience, strong business acumen, and a positive and proactive attitude to join our Canadian legal team.

The ideal candidate will have substantive corporate and commercial experience with an interest in health, privacy, and competition law. This individual will work across Medtronic businesses to:

  • Advise on diverse issues including complex legal questions, commercial contracts, competitive public procurement processes, product liability, and transactions/M&A.
  • Support business opportunities and mitigate risks.
  • Maintain compliance with internal policies such as our Business Conduct Standards.
  • Contribute to high-level policy decision-making.

Legal counsel must possess strong legal skills and be able to interact effectively with all levels of employees, including internal and external cross-functional support. This role requires professionalism and responsiveness in a large, dynamic, fast-paced environment.

This position can reside in our office locations of Brampton, Pointe-Claire, Vancouver, or work remotely within Canada.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:
  • Provide legal advice, counsel, and service to internal business clients concerning legal rights, obligations, and privileges of corporations.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate various commercial agreements and documents.
  • Stay current on legislative issues, statutes, decisions, and ordinances of quasi-judicial bodies.
  • Provide legal guidance on policies, procedures, legislation, and business practices.
  • Identify, anticipate, and help mitigate key legal risks.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts on commercial, regulatory, and compliance matters to build consensus or resolve legal and business issues.
  • Manage and drive multiple projects to completion efficiently.
  • Work with outside counsel to direct activities.
MUST HAVE: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Law Degree with strong academic credentials in Common and/or Civil Law from a duly accredited Canadian law school.
  • Member in good standing of a Canadian Bar/Law Society.
  • 5+ years of legal experience in corporate and commercial law.
NICE TO HAVE
  • Previous in-house experience with a medical device or other life science company is an asset.
  • Excellent command of English and French languages.
  • Strong business acumen, good common sense, and sound judgment.
  • Exceptional analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Experience working in a complex, matrixed structure.
  • Ability to inspire trust and confidence in client groups.
  • Capability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with excellent project management skills.
