Job summary

Highbrow LLC is seeking a Principal Engineer in Toronto to own the data platform from ingestion to consumption. You will guide a small team of solution engineers, ensure platform stability, and deliver value to tenants. Expertise in Java, Python, JavaScript, or Scala, plus Azure, Databricks, and Kubernetes, is essential.

You will lead architectural design, monitor health and FinOps, and drive cross-team coordination to meet strategic objectives in a cloud-native environment.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in engineering or technical field.
• 8+ years of relevant experience in data platforms or cloud data solutions.
• Strong Azure knowledge and data lake concepts.
• Experience with CI/CD on Azure and Terraform.

Principal Engineer (Client: ???)

Job Description

• Experience in designing and operating a Data Platform from ingestion to consumption.
• Take full ownership of data platform operations and customer delivery.
• Ensure the platform is stable, and value is delivered to its tenants.
• Direct guidance to a small team of solution engineers as they address various data platform challenges.
• Responsibilities will include technical guidance and/or creative work arounds for platform temporary limitations.
• Monitor health and user FinOps statistics, cost optimization and customer satisfaction.
• Expert level in one or more programming languages (i.e. Java, Python, Javascript, Scala).
• Exposure with AKS/Docker, Virtual Machines, streaming, API development and more.
• Design/Research/Implement required process components to enable Azure functionalities (i.e. Unity Catalog, Azure Purview).
• Experience with 3rd party vendors is a plus (i.e. Dremio / Confluent Kafka).
• Exceptional communication skills and ability to coordinate and liaison with multiple parties involved to align to strategic data platform and execution of needed components.
• Ability to create Architectural diagrams with networking focus and system design.
• Experience in PaaS offerings from Azure / GCP / Databricks
• Must be able to lead complex projects and competing priorities with a high level of technical acumen and strong communication skills.
• Analyze all platform level changes, monitor application impact, and provide appropriate technical solutions to resolve all issues quickly and efficiently.
• Actively manages and escalates risk and customer-impacting issues within the day-to-day role to management.
• Achieves product commitments (and influences others to do the same) by using informal leadership & highly developed communication skills and contributes to or led technology communities.
• Uses automation, system tools, open-source solutions, observability and ‘security first’ principles in daily work.
• Contributes to team agile ceremonies, leads demos and presentations, helps new engineers learn established norms
• Initiates high level solution design approaches, and guides team to achieve desired key software delivery capabilities using automated, coded enterprise and observability.
• Participates in internal speaking and advocacy events.

Qualifications

Required:

• Undergraduate Degree in Engineering or Technical Certificate.
• 8+ years relevant experience.
• Azure Cloud Knowledge (Azure Data Lake, Managed Identities, Service Principals)
• Experience with CI/CD or DevOPs working with Azure.
• Hands-on experience developing and managing data solutions using Databricks.
• Experience provisioning and managing cloud infrastructure using Terraform (Infrastructure as Code).
• Strong experience deploying, orchestrating, and managing containerized applications with Kubernetes.
• Expert knowledge one or many of the follow (Java, Python, JavaScript).
• Experience operating in a cloud environment.
• Willingness and strength in providing guidance and influencing multiple teams across a broad spectrum of initiatives and functional domains.
