Job summary

Ericsson in Ottawa is seeking a Principal Developer to steer technical strategy and implement portable RAN software across COTS platforms. You will lead cross-platform efforts and collaborate with the RAN Performance Systems & Dimensioning team to enable scalable deployments on Intel, ARM, AMD and RISC-V.

The role requires deep system-level thinking, strong leadership, and hands-on experience with virtualization (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenStack), ML methods, and benchmarking.

Qualifications

• 12+ years as a systems engineer or research engineer
• Strong background in communications theory, digital signal processing, and COTS architecture
• Applied experience with machine learning methodologies including reinforcement learning, federated learning, generative AI, and LLMs
• Proven experience in Agile development environments
• Hands-on experience with virtualization and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenStack)
• Demonstrated ability to develop technical standards and reusable engineering assets
• Track record mentoring distributed technical teams across multiple sites
• Publications or IP portfolios in industry research or forums

About this opportunity: Principal Developer: Portability Across COTS Platforms

Ericsson seeks a Principal Developer to lead technical strategy and implementation for RAN software portability across heterogeneous commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) platforms. You will join the RAN Performance Systems & Dimensioning team, driving the evolution of software-based RAN solutions toward portable platforms.

This role combines deep technical expertise with strategic platform enablement, requiring strong system-level thinking to optimize scalable RAN node solutions across diverse hardware ecosystems (Intel, ARM, AMD, RISC-V).

What you will do:

• Provide technical leadership in enabling and optimizing RAN software across heterogeneous COTS platforms
• Drive cross-domain portability guardrails and establish architectural alignments
• Conduct hands‑on, end‑to‑end onboarding trials to inform platform evaluation decisions

The skills you will bring:

• Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, or equivalent
• Minimum 12 years as a systems engineer or research engineer
• Strong background in communications theory, digital signal processing, and COTS architecture
• Applied experience of using machine learning methodologies including reinforcement learning, federated learning, generative AI, and LLMs
• Proven experience in Agile development environments
• Hands‑on experience with virtualization and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenStack)
• Demonstrated ability to conduct platform benchmarking, performance profiling, and end‑to‑end system validation
• Experience developing and establishing technical standards, architectural frameworks, and reusable engineering assets
• Track record of mentoring and leading distributed technical teams across multiple sites
• Published contributions to industry research, technical forums, or intellectual property portfolios

Your Pay

The salary offered is dependent on various factors including, but not limited to, location, and the candidate’s combination of job‑related knowledge, qualifications, skills, education, training, and experience.

The salary range for this position is

• Ottawa: $169,500 - $222,600

Short-Term Variable Compensation Plan

Your pay also includes the opportunity for an annual bonus. Actual bonus payouts are based on performance of the business against the unit’s objectives, individual performance, and the individual bonus target. Certain eligibility and pro‑ration rules apply.

Your Financial Security

We invest in both your short and long‑term financial wellbeing. Ericsson’s Group Retirement & Savings Program offers an automatic 2% company contribution into the Pension Plan. Ericsson also offers a 50% match of employee’s contribution into the Registered Retirement Savings Plan, up to 8% of the employee’s contribution (maximum of 4% match). This leads to a total company contribution potential of 6%. Employees will also basic life insurance and basic accidental death and dismemberment coverage at two‑times annual base pay at no cost, as well as short‑term disability coverage. Employees also have the option to participate in Ericsson’s Stock Purchase Plan.

Your Time

Your work‑life balance is important to us. New employees are provided a minimum of 18 days of accrued vacation, at least 3personal days, minimum 10 holidays, 1 volunteer day, and sick days. Please note paid time off is pro‑rated based on the employee’s start date. Furthermore, Ericsson provides up to 10 weeks of paid maternity leave and 6 weeks of parental or adoption leave at 100% of pay.
