Job summary

Scotiabank is seeking a Principal Engineer within the Cloud Storage Engineering team to design and build platform components for enterprise use on public cloud.

You will lead a product/service and mentor a team of 8+ engineers while ensuring high availability, security and scalable cloud solutions for the bank.

Qualifications

  • 5–10 years of hands-on technical experience with Cloud managed development/services (GCP).
  • 5–10 years with Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • 5–10 years with development languages (Go, Python).
  • 5–10 years with container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain cloud platform components and services for enterprise use.
  • Lead a product or service and guide 8+ engineers.
  • Ensure software meets availability, integrity, reliability, security and compliance requirements.
  • Mentor peers through code reviews and design discussions.
  • Collaborate with application teams for successful onboarding onto the platform.

The role of the Principal Engineer operates within the Cloud Storage Engineering team. This valuable member of the team will be responsible for creating platform components and services for the broad enterprise use.

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:
  • Champion a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
  • Have key accountabilities including design, development and maintenance of cloud platforms, services, and components to enable safe enterprise-wide use of public cloud offerings
  • Take ownership/leadership of a component of a larger product.
  • Be designing, implementing, and refactoring code (typically Go, Python).
  • Ensure software, programs and applications are developed and/or configured to meet high availability, integrity and reliability, security, and compliance requirements.
  • Work with other engineers and architects on breaking-down, scoping and estimating tasks.
  • Work with application teams for successful onboarding onto the Platform
  • Participate in planning and retrospective sessions, attending stand-ups, etc.
  • Provide mentorship, peer review and code review
  • Lead a product/service, and define functions or features for cloud platforms, lead the work of 8+ engineers
  • Be able to build and operate the highly available and scalable software and infrastructure.
Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:
  • At least 5-10 years of hands-on technical working experience with Cloud Managed Development/Services such as Google Cloud Storage
  • At least 5-10 years of hands-on technical working experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • At least 5-10 years of hands-on technical working experience with development languages (Go, Python, etc)
  • At least 5-10 years of hands-on technical working experience with container-based technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • At least 5-10 years of hands-on technical working experience in the use of CI/CD Tools
  • At least 5-10 years of hands-on technical working experience with config management tools and Scripting Languages (Ansible, Bash, Groovy)
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
Nice to Have:
  • Bachelor (equivalent or higher) degree in computer science or engineering/mathematics discipline.
  • Expertise and understanding of Cloud Native Platforms, particularly Kubernetes, and associated technologies (e.g., Istio, Envoy, Anthos, Kustomize).
  • Experience working with monitoring tools such as Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana, etc.
  • Full understanding of software development lifecycle and release process (container-native workflow for job orchestration, Git/GitOps, CI/CD, environments, code repositories).
  • Understanding of different database technologies (e.g. CloudSQL, NoSQL, Relational databases)
  • Knowledge of software design patterns, and/or security considerations
  • Focus on scalable, enterprise-level software system design (both on code and infrastructure levels)
  • Passion for driving teams towards high performance and a deep pride in quality craftsmanship.
  • High level Unix administration skills
