Tri-County Regional Centre for Education

The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) encompasses the three (3) Counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby, serving approximately 6100 students across twenty-two (22) schools, including 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

Position: Principal - Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE)

Reports to: Director of Programs and Student Services

Candidates in the TCRCE Principal Pool and/or the TCRCE Vice-Principal pool will be considered for this position.

The principal of a public school is the educational leader responsible for the overall management of the school, including teachers and staff.

Qualifications
  • Either a)) A Master’s Degree in Education, preferably with an administrative component;
  • or b)) Be actively enrolled in a Master’s Program, preferably with an administrative component, and have completed at least two (2) courses towards that degree;
  • or c)) An Administrative Block Program;
  • or d)) Completed Nova Scotia Instructional Leadership Academy Program (NSELC);
  • or e)) Formal qualifications as determined by the Regional Centre, including a minimum of an undergraduate degree in education and relevant training/experience.

Additional qualifications include:

  • Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience;
  • Commitment to establishing partnerships with community groups;
  • Proven decision-making skills and collegiality;
  • Strong strategic planning and instructional program implementation skills;
  • Knowledge of and commitment to inclusive education;
  • Ability to foster professional growth among staff;
  • Expertise in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Skills in facilities, record, financial management, and supervision;
  • Proficiency with current educational technology;
  • Awareness of cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding;
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse backgrounds;
  • Valuing collaborative input and openness to feedback;
  • Commitment to firm, clear discipline practices;
  • Willingness to obtain WHMIS and First Aid certifications if not already held;
  • Ability to fulfill duties as outlined in Section 38 of the Education Act.
Experience
  • At least 2 years of administrative experience, preferably at similar grade levels;
  • At least 5 years of teaching experience, preferably at similar grade levels.
Accountabilities

The principal is responsible for:

  • Implementing the school program and curricula;
  • Maintaining attendance records and reporting as required;
  • Promoting full and regular student attendance;
  • Communicating regularly with parents;
  • Creating a safe, positive, and effective learning environment;
  • Following provincial and regional policies;
  • Identifying staffing needs and assisting in staff selection;
  • Evaluating staff performance;
  • Supervising Early Childhood Educators;
  • Participating in professional development programs;
  • Encouraging participation in school decision-making;
  • Participating in the establishment and operation of a school council;
  • Assisting in school improvement planning and reporting;
  • Managing school finances and resources;
  • Adhering to Occupational Health & Safety Regulations;
  • Collaborating with other government departments and agencies;
  • Performing other duties as prescribed or assigned.

This position is within the Public School Administrators Association of Nova Scotia (PSAANS). The salary range is Band 11, according to the Education Entities Non-Union Compensation Framework. For details, see the framework here.
