Reporting to the Manager of Prepress, Colour and Quality Control, the Prepress Operator is a well- rounded individual who has a high degree of technical literacy, an in-depth understanding of colour separations as it applies to the packaging industry, and strong communication skills.

This role is expected to have the ability to edit and color separate the designs to make it applicable for flexo printing. Recognize, adapt and implement changes in the printing files as well as identify potential problems. Prepare electronic files per customer and printer specifications and produce press ready files for conventional and/or digital flexo output.

Responsibilities

When your actions lead to success:

  • Support the Packaging Team’s daily activities
  • Meet client brand standards at all times and make recommendations for improvements in processes and assigned tasks;
  • Understand packaging print processes
  • Interpret work orders according to specifications given
  • Analyze and resolve print-related production problems and technical issues
  • Make corrections to customer supplied art, setting type, simplifying vector art supplied by customer, colour separation of line art elements, min dots, traps and bleeds, knockouts, adding all marks and tag lines, adding all printers’ marks, and checking the customer’s supplied artwork
  • Build graphics to correct size according to customer supplied specifications files within specified parameters for flexographic printing.
  • Prepare and step graphic files for optimum production results using ESKO Automation Engine
  • Produce and verify printable bar codes, output content and contract proofs
  • Utilize GMG colour management software to produce digital proofs
  • Apply bump curves, cutbacks and screen angles for flexo final plating files
  • RIP and step files according to specs; apply correct colour profile
  • Participate in pre-production meetings if required
  • Build SOPs as required.
  • Support and Troubleshooting:- Participate in troubleshooting to resolve issues with supplied files - Other tasks as assigned
  • Support and contribute to a healthy and safe work environment by following all workplace regulations, policies, and initiatives, including reporting all first aid injuries, accidents, and workplace hazards.
Qualifications

When your expertise drives us:

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field or equivalent years of experience within a flexographic prepress/print environment
  • At least 2-4 years experience in a prepress role within the printing industry
  • Have the ability to work cross-platform Mac and PC
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Fast learner, innovative thinker along with excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills;
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • An understanding and working knowledge of printing processes (Flexo, Gravure & Litho printing);
  • Excellent listening and communication skills, both written and interpersonal skills. Attention to detail and ability to interpret and incorporate detailed feedback on files
  • Expertise with prepress software solutions including, but not limited to: Esko and GMG.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite including Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat Pro
  • Experience / working knowledge of Digital Prepress workflows

Knowledge / familiarity with food packaging a plus
