Job description

Job Title: Prep Cook

Location: Iqaluit, Nunavut

Status: Full-time

Salary Range: Starting at $60,000–$65,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Northern Allowance: Approx. $16,008 annually.

Position Summary

The Prep Cook is responsible for supporting the daily kitchen operations of the Family Resource Centre (FRC) in Iqaluit. Under the direction of the Head Cook or Kitchen Manager, the Prep Cook performs a variety of food preparation duties to ensure that meals served at the Centre meet established nutritional, cultural, and food safety standards. This position plays an important role in delivering healthy meals to children, youth, and families participating in the Centre’s programs.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare ingredients for meals and snacks (chopping vegetables, measuring ingredients, basic cooking tasks)
  • Assist in the preparation and baking of nutritious meals following planned menus and dietary guidelines
  • Ensure that all food is prepared in a sanitary and timely manner
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen facilities, utensils, and equipment
  • Comply with public health regulations, workplace safety protocols, and food safety standards
  • Support meal service to clients, families, and staff during daily programming and special events
  • Receive, stock, and rotate food supplies and maintain proper storage practices
  • Record temperature logs and assist with inventory management
  • Provide support during culturally significant food preparation (when appropriate)
  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to the overall positive environment of the Centre
Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working in a kitchen or food service environment
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural or community setting is an asset
  • Completion of Food Safe Level 1 certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
  • Knowledge of Indigenous food practices, country food handling, and northern nutrition needs is an asset

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of food preparation, baking, and kitchen safety procedures
  • Understanding of dietary guidelines for children and families
  • Ability to follow instructions, work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Physical ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 25 lbs

Assets:

  • Bilingual (Inuktitut and English or French)
  • Familiarity with GN food service protocols or working in government-contracted programs.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in a fast-paced kitchen environment with exposure to hot equipment, sharp tools, and food allergens
  • Occasional flexible hours may be required for special events or programming outside normal working hours
  • This position may involve interaction with children, families, and community members in culturally sensitive settings
