Job summary

Chartwell Retirement Residences is seeking a Prep Cook to join our kitchen team. You will help prepare meals, ensure dietary needs are met, and maintain a clean and organized workspace to deliver a welcoming dining experience for residents.

You'll work in a team-focused environment that values food safety, attention to detail, and timely service. The role supports events and requires flexibility for varied shifts in a retirement community setting.

Qualifications

• 1–2 years of experience in volume food preparation, preferably in retirement or hospitality.
• Familiar with maintaining high hygiene and safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and cook meals meeting residents' dietary needs.
• Wash, chop and prepare ingredients like meats, vegetables and salads.
• Keep the kitchen clean and organized, including dishes and work surfaces.
• Support special event food preparation to highlight Chartwell’s hospitality.
• Follow safe food handling and store supplies properly.
• Receive and store food and supplies and perform daily temperature checks.

As a Prep Cook at Chartwell, you’ll play an important role in preparing meals that make our residents feel at home. By supporting the kitchen team with meal preparation, food safety, and cleanliness, you’ll help provide a dining experience that nourishes both body and spirit.

What You’ll Do

• Help prepare and cook meals that meet residents' dietary needs
• Wash, chop, and prepare ingredients like meats, vegetables, and salads
• Keep the kitchen clean and organized, including dishes and work surfaces
• Support special event food preparation to highlight Chartwell’s hospitality
• Follow safe food handling, health, and safety practices, and store supplies properly
• Receive and store food and supplies, while completing daily temperature checks for fridges, freezers, and storerooms

What You’ll Bring

• 1-2 years of experience in a volume food preparation environment, ideally in retirement, long-term care, or hospitality
• High school graduate or equivalent education
• Food Safe Level 1 certificate (Level 2 preferred)
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work under time constraints
• Maintain high standards of hygiene, cleanliness, and attention to detail
• Team player with strong customer service and clear communication skills

Additional Requirements

• Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
• Physical ability to stand for long periods, bend, lift, push, and carry items during meal preparation and service
• Ability to safely operate kitchen equipment
• Preparedness to respond to emergency situations in accordance with residence protocols
• Clear Criminal Background Check, VSS and TB Test where required
