The Lower Mainland Biomedical Engineering (LMBME) consolidated group under Providence Health Care is currently accepting applications for a full-time Precision Instrumentation Machinist to join our team. Please note that this is a temporary position until June 2026 or the return of the incumbent.

What You Will Do

The Precision Instrumentation Machinist is part of an integrated Biomedical Engineering team, which provides services in support of the safe, efficient and effective utilization of medical technology across Fraser Health, Providence Health Care, Provincial Health Services Authority and Vancouver Coastal Health (collectively, the “Organizations“). Duties include performing skilled journeyman work related to the maintenance, creation, fabrication, repair and modification of a variety of surgical instrumentation, mechanical medical equipment and related accessories. The position also performs duties such as creating working drawings (CAD/CAM) from samples, interpreting engineering drawings and operating milling machinery, reviewing work requests, gathering information and consulting with other LMBME team members, clinical areas and vendors, participating in risk management and quality improvement activities, equipment evaluation and inspection, inventory control, and maintenance of records.

Your duties will include:

  • Maintaining and Repairing Surgical Equipment: Calibrating, inspecting, adjusting, sharpening, and repairing surgical instruments and mechanical medical equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  • Custom Fabrication and Machining: Designing and fabricating custom parts or modifications using CNC and conventional milling machines, lathes, grinders, and welding tools; interpreting engineering drawings and creating CAD/CAM files when needed.
  • Collaborating and Problem Solving: Working closely with Biomedical Engineering Technologists, clinical staff, and vendors to assess project needs, source materials, recommend solutions, and install or modify equipment across multiple sites.
  • Documentation, Safety, and Quality Improvement: Maintaining accurate records, supporting risk management and quality improvement activities, monitoring inventory, and contributing to equipment evaluation and purchasing decisions.

What You Bring

  • Certificate of Apprenticeship or Trades Qualification Certificate as a journeyman Machinist recognized by the Province of B.C. Two years' recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Who We Are:

Lower Mainland Biomedical Engineering focuses primarily on health care technology management by providing a wide range of technical and engineering expertise. Under Providence Health Care, LMBME serves four health organizations in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia: Fraser Health Authority (FHA), Providence Health Care (PHC), Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), and Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).

LMBME acts as the technology resource and manages medical devices throughout their entire life cycle; starting from the planning for purchase and development of specifications stage, through the purchasing, implementation, maintenance, and finally, end of life and disposition stage.

Your Day to Day:

  • Maintains mechanical medical equipment and surgical instruments such as graspers, cutting instruments, osteotomes, endoscopes and retractors by performing duties such as calibrating, inspecting, adjusting, sharpening, and repairing units to ensure optimal condition in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Reviews work requests and consults with Clinical Engineers, Biomedical Engineering Technologists, clinical areas, and outside vendors to determine project needs.
  • Programs, operates and maintains machine shop equipment such as CNC and conventional milling machines, lathes, grinders, drill presses, welders (TIG) and hand tools.
  • Maintains records of work completed by performing duties such as recording maintenance and repair activities and documenting equipment status.
  • Participates in a variety of risk management and quality improvement activities.
  • Participates in an inventory control program.
  • Performs modifications to equipment and instruments and/or fabricates items such as replacement parts.
  • Communicates with designated personnel such as purchasing, sterile supply and operating room staff.
  • Participates in the purchase of surgical instrumentation.
  • Transports equipment to and from appropriate locations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
