Pre-Screen Application - Machinist

Machinists set up and operate precision metal cutting and grinding machines such as lathes, milling machines, drills and grinders to make and repair products made from metals, plastics, rubber textiles, fibreglass and space age alloys. Machinists work according to very precise specifications. When there are no prints or other specifications, they determine dimensions by logic or by measuring samples using instruments such as micrometers and calipers.

DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:

1. Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, charts and tables or study sample parts to determine machining operation to be performed, and plan best sequence of operations
2. Compute dimensions and tolerances and measure and lay out work pieces
3. Set up, operate and maintain a variety of machine tools including computer numerically controlled (CNC) tools to perform precision, non-repetitive machining operations such as sawing, turning, milling, boring, planing, drilling, precision grinding and other operations
4. Fit and assemble machined metal parts and subassemblies using hand and power tools
5. Verify dimensions of products for accuracy and conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments
6. May set up and program machine tools for use by machining tool operators

WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIREMENTS

1. Completion of secondary school
2. Trade certification or industry courses or combination of education and experience
3. A minimum of 2 years relevant experience
