Job description

An Electrician is a designated trade in Alberta.

Being designated means that there are regulated standards that must be met. Foreign candidates must have their credentials assessed and approved in order to work as a Journeyman/woman Electrician. There are different types of electricians including: Industrial, power system, electrical mechanics, and telecommunications, etc.

Electricians install, alter, repair and maintain electrical systems designed to provide heat, light, power, control, signal or fire alarms for all types of buildings, structures and premises.

DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:
  1. Read and interpret electrical, mechanical and architectural drawings, specifications, and applicable codes to determine wiring layouts
  2. Cut, thread, bend, assemble and install conduits and other types of electrical conductor enclosures and fittings
  3. Pull wire through conduits and holes in walls and floors
  4. Position, maintain and install distribution and control equipment such as switches, relays, circuit breaker panels and fuse enclosures
  5. Install, replace, maintain and repair electrical systems and related electrical equipment
  6. Install data cabling
  7. Splice, join and connect wire to form circuits
  8. Test circuits to ensure integrity and safety
  9. Install and maintain fibre optic systems
  10. Install, replace, maintain and repair electrical generation sources and related equipment
  11. May specialize in renewable energy (e.g. wind/solar).
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  1. Physically fit, able to bend, stretch and kneel
  2. Able to adapt to changing priorities and tasks
  3. Ability to manage time, think critically and troubleshoot

FOREIGN NATIONAL WORKERS - WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of secondary school
  • A minimum of 72 months (6 years) AND 9180 hours of work experience
  • A successful theory exam
  • A Trades Competency Verification (to be completed while working with an Alberta-based employer within 18 months of the approval date of your Trades Qualifier Program application.)
