Position Summary:

The Pre-Press Artist is responsible for preparing files for analogue (screen printing) and digital print production using Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. You will enhance files for printability and manufacturability, work with CAD technical drawings, understand tolerances, and rebuild files to ensure compatibility with our equipment, including a film-based imagesetter. Manual color separation skills are essential for preparing screen printing films. Key duties include making files print-ready, high-quality, and manufacturable, as well as reading technical drawings, proofing, simplifying complex files, maintaining accuracy, attention to detail, and efficient file management.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Review work orders and accompanying materials, ensuring each job has all the required information, and obtain additional details from Sales, Planning, Estimating, and supervisors as needed.
  • Create proofs and layouts, specify spot/CMYK colors and inks, and be knowledgeable about fonts based on customer specifications.
  • Formulate layout design concepts to maximize production efficiency and minimize costs.
  • Collaborate with Planning and supervisors to establish project priorities in a dynamic production environment.
  • Perform peer quality checks and final quality control before jobs leave the department.
  • Maintain and back up computer files for all jobs in a timely manner.
  • Ensure customer specifications are met or improved upon in the proofing/production process.
  • Follow work orders and instructions from supervisors meticulously.
  • Maintain high product standards and produce jobs in a timely manner.
  • Ensure files sent to output devices are correct and optimized for output.
  • Efficiently produce artwork according to customer specifications and supervisory direction.
  • Stay organized to meet deadlines and budget requirements.
  • Order and allocate supplies and materials as needed.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
What You Bring to Ampco:
  • 2-4 years of print industry experience or prepress training for large format print production, including knowledge of color models (CMYK, Pantone).
  • Familiarity with industry-standard print and production software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications (including Excel for serializing and variable data) and Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • General knowledge of analogue and digital printing (screen printing, large format printing, variable data, imposition).
  • Ability to work well in a team and build strong relationships with other departments.
  • Ability to complete projects accurately within deadlines while meeting company quality standards.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and thoroughness.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise independent, sound judgment.
  • Adaptability and positive response to changing details and priorities.
