Pre-Placement Nurse

Status: Full Time

Hours: Monday – Friday, 35 hours/week

Home Campus: IAHS (hybrid work arrangements available)

Rate of Pay: Payband K (Start Rate: $46.08 per hour)

Job Summary

The Preplacement Nurse is the lead for confirming and implementing legislative contractual health requirements, validating health records, and supporting students/staff prior to commencing academic placements on behalf of the Preplacement Office. The incumbent is responsible for providing a high level of confidentiality at all times and will contribute to the success of students and their completion of Non-Academic Requirements (NARs).

The incumbent is responsible for communicating NARs to students/staff (in person, via phone, email), participating in program orientations, entering and verifying health data, monitoring student compliance, and supporting the academic areas.

This position acts as the subject matter expert in matters of infection control and will provide guidance and advice to programs and students on the current practices in infection control. This position will also be required to contact health care providers and Public Health, as required.

What you’ll be doing:

Act as Clinical Lead of Pre-Placement Services

  • Monitors any changes in guidelines and protocols through a variety of resources as they apply to student placement health requirements and communicates these changes to a sub-committee and/or Manager on a regular basis. These resources include: Canadian TB Standards, Canadian Immunization Guide, Public Health, WHO, CDC recommendations, placement facility requirements, program requirements, and Mohawk College guidelines.
  • Maintains communication and rapport with area Public Health department and communicates any changes, from their perspective, to the Manager and the Pre-Placement team.
  • Responsible for monitoring the Pre-Placement Nurse email and coordinating work distribution/continuation with PT/casual Pre-Placement Nurses, to ensure even work-flow distribution and quick response times to inquiries from students and faculty/staff.
  • Gathers information on upcoming flu and COVID clinics and disseminate to academic areas and students. Promotes the importance of immunizations and increases student awareness, particularly for those programs where it is “strongly recommended and required” by placement facilities.
  • Monitors standards re: flu and COVID immunization with community partners.
  • Develops and implements plans to ensure high rates of vaccination.
  • Guides and advises students on the implications of not completing Non-academic requirements and impacts on program outcomes.
  • Consults with the Manager and Pre-Placement Program Officers to collaborate on best practices and processes.
  • Trains, mentors, and provides guidance to PT Pre-placement Nurse or other staff as required.
  • Acts as the liaison with the local and surrounding Infection Control Network and recommends how to best implement practices. Attends relevant seminars and workshops related to infection control.
  • Monitors and suggests changes to the NARs database. Identifies database concerns and issues and works collaboratively to resolve issues. Keeps Manager up to date as issues arise and are resolved.
  • Provides clinical input to the regular review of pre-placement health requirements and the processes and forms for their collection to ensure requirements are current and that information to students is the most helpful in gaining compliance.

Coordinates and Implements Student Verification

  • Reviews, tracks, verifies, and certifies non-academic requirements (NARs) for placement students and faculty/staff.
  • Assists students with the completion of pre-placement health requirements. This requires counselling of the students, noting deficiencies, and referring to Health Care Providers, as required.
  • Works in collaboration with Pre-Placement Program Officers to ensure deadlines are met and risks are identified.
  • Attends program orientation to outline requirements and answer questions.
  • Communicates requirements for compliance with students (by providing ongoing student support related to Q&A’s, submission status, and new requirements)
  • Advises students on completion expectations and implications.
  • Analyzes and problem solves to support the successful completion of TB tests and immunization requirements.
  • Completes secondary placement site requirements for students attending placement outside of Hamilton.
  • Monitors student compliance by analyzing NARs database reports and provides input to academic areas on compliance, as required.
  • Liaises and coordinates with the Pre-Placement Program Officers with data collection and verification process.
  • Enters documentation into database and provides guidance to PT Pre-Placement Nurses to ensure data verification is inputted according to guidelines and requirements.
  • Liaises with the academic areas in matters related to health-related NARs.
  • Scans, shreds, and files documentation, ensuring that processes meet privacy and storage requirements.
  • Exhibits strong external relations, while maintaining student confidentiality, through contacts from other educational facilities and health care agencies.
  • Participates in program promotional activities.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • Registered Nurse holding a current College of Nurses of Ontario Certificate of Registration. Skills acquired through the attainment of a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree or equivalency of experience and education.
  • A minimum of 8 years of clinical experience in a health care setting, including occupational health & safety, infection control experience, Public Health, and reviewing immunization and TB records.
  • Professional designation and College of Nurses of Ontario Certificate of Registration is required.
  • Annual CPR/AED training required.
  • Mental Health First Aid certification strongly recommended.
  • Occupational health and safety knowledge and experience.
  • Proven proficiency and knowledge of immunization, TB requirements, and other pre-placement requirements.
  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills in working with students, staff, faculty, health care providers and community partners.
  • High level organizational skills to prioritize service delivery, while maintaining accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently with frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
