Pre-Apprentice - Tooling

This position is responsible for learning the fundamentals of building and repairing new and existing dies, tooling, and automation components in a safe, clean, and efficient manner under the guidance of experienced toolmakers.

• Assures for all assigned equipment, safety guarding is in place and all areas of the machines are clean, neat and organized.
• Begins the process of understanding:
  • Tooling specifications, blueprints, and sketches.
  • Set up and operation of mills, lathes, grinders, including CNC controlled, and other machining equipment.
  • Making and repairing cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, and gauges.
• Takes direction from experienced toolmakers or from the Tool Room Manager.
• Learns to analyze the assignment and proceed in a professional, timely manner until the assignment is complete.
• Gains an understanding of completing assignments in a timely manner within proper quality specifications.
• Performs additional duties as assigned.

• Ability to gain knowledge of using precise measuring instruments.
• Self-motivated and capable of retaining knowledge acquired from experienced toolmakers.
• Interest in attaining knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, use, repair, and maintenance.
• Ability to communicate clearly.
• Ability to work as part of a team and take direction properly.
• Ability to utilize Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook at a basic level.
• Ability to focus on a single source of sound in the presence of other distracting sounds.
• Ability to communicate in verbal and written English.
• Requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping, and feeling.
• Requires eye/hand/foot coordination.
• Requires the ability to lift up to 40 pounds.

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

• Up to 1% may be required.
