Job description

VIU Nursing Instructor Job Description

VIU is seeking dynamic nursing instructors to deliver a variety of courses (some virtual) within the Practical Nursing (PN) program at our Nanaimo, Cowichan, and Tiwšɛmawtxʷ campuses for the 2024/2025 academic year. For a complete listing of our course offerings, see here.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Participating in teaching and learning opportunities in clinical, lab, and classroom settings, including preparing and delivering class content, designing and grading student assignments and tests, and facilitating student integration of theory and practice.
  2. Working collaboratively within a team-oriented faculty focused on student success and teaching excellence.
  3. Fostering student success, developing stimulating learning opportunities, and participating in instructional advising.
  4. Engaging in departmental and faculty meetings, curriculum development, and administrative planning activities.
  5. Supporting student needs and participating in departmental and faculty committees.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution with current practicing registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM);
  • Completion or in-progress status of the BC Provincial Instructor Diploma Program, or a commitment to complete within two years from an accredited institution;
  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) registration with BCCNM; qualified to teach clinical and lab courses.

Experience:

  • At least five years of recent medical, surgical, and gerontological nursing experience;
  • Familiarity with practice settings in Central Vancouver Island, including community, gerontology, and acute care;
  • Responsiveness to a diverse student population;
  • Understanding of the scope and role of LPNs in the healthcare system;
  • Proficiency with information technology applications;
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal ways of knowing and cultural teachings.

Additional requirements include possessing a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record, with some positions requiring travel to various practice locations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or a related field;
  • Experience teaching adult learners in post-secondary settings;
  • Familiarity with computer applications and learning management systems (D2L).
