Job summary

Valard Construction in Ottawa, ON is seeking a Journeyperson Powerline Technician to support the construction of overhead and underground power distribution systems on a unionized project.

You will perform live-line work, conduit and equipment installations, safety compliance, and lead or mentor apprentices while maintaining HSE standards and documentation for the crew.

Qualifications

• Journeyperson Powerline Technician (434A or Red Seal)
• Demonstrated experience in the utility construction sector
• Direct power distribution experience
• Experience in energized work, system switching, and underground installations
• Class 4 Rubber Glove experience
• Understanding of distribution system construction and maintenance
• Ability to read construction prints and electrical schematics
• Valid Driver’s Licence with ability to provide a clean abstract
• Preference for Confined Space, UWPC, Working at Heights, First Aid (CPR/AED)

Responsibilities

• Maintain steel/wood poles, towers, and guy wires
• Install overhead and underground power lines, insulators, conductors, transformers, switches and related equipment
• Perform conductor stringing, sagging, clipping, and dead-ending (energized and de-energized)
• Execute advanced switching: reclosers and loop feeds
• Perform UG cable testing, terminations, and equipment installation
• Splice, solder, and insulate conductors for connections
• Model safe work practices and ensure crew adherence to HSE policies
• Mentor apprentices and junior personnel on tasks and safety
• Lead or assist with job hazard assessments and fall protection plans
• Ensure proper documentation of safety forms and inspections
• Submit daily documentation and reports

Our Distribution group is currently seeking Journeyperson Powerline Technicians (PLT) to join our growing team, in the Ottawa, ON area.

Reporting to the Construction Foreman, PLT's are responsible for construction of overhead and underground electrical power distribution systems. This is a hands-on role where your technical ability and commitment to safety will directly support our operations and team culture.

Please Note: Candidates must reside locally or within a reasonable commuting distance. These projects will be for unionized worksites. Candidates must be willing to join Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW).

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintain steel / wood poles, towers, and guy wires
• Install overhead and underground power lines, insulators, conductors, transformers, switches, and associated equipment
• Perform conductor stringing, sagging, clipping, and dead-ending (energized and de-energized)
• Execute advanced system switching tasks, including reclosers and loop feeds
• Perform UG (underground) cable testing, terminations, and equipment installation
• Splice, solder, and insulate conductors for connections
• Model safe work practices and ensure crew adherence to Valard’s HSE policies
• Mentor apprentices and junior personnel in tasks, safety protocols, and equipment use
• Proficiently carry out advanced live line work procedures and teach basic live line procedures to apprentices
• Lead or assist with job hazard assessments, fall protection plans, and critical lift plans
• Ensure proper documentation of safety forms, inspections, and procedural compliance
• Submit daily documentation and reports

• Demonstrated experience in the utility construction sector

• Demonstrated experience in energized work, system switching, and UG installations
• Class 4 Rubber Glove experience
• Understanding of construction and maintenance practices for distribution systems
• Ability to read construction prints and electrical schematics
• Valid Drivers Licence with ability to provide an acceptable Drivers Abstract (Preference for Commercial Drivers Licence)
• Preference for Confined Space Certificate, UWPC, Working at Heights Cert, First Aid (CPR/AED)

This project will be a unionized worksite. Candidates must be willing to join Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW)

This position offers an hourly rate of $45.04 - $67.56 / hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
