Job summary

Northwest Territories Power Corporation seeks a Journeyperson Power Lineperson to perform construction and maintenance on high-voltage transmission and distribution systems. Based in Fort Smith, the role supports NTPC service areas including Dehcho/Sahtu and North Slave regions.

Responsibilities include installing transformers, reading meters, and ensuring safety across operations while traveling as needed. A Red Seal is preferred; a Class 3 license with air brake is required.

Qualifications

  • Journeyperson certification required; Red Seal preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in installation/maintenance of power distribution lines.
  • Class 3 driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
  • Ability to read blueprints and interpret electrical diagrams and specs.
  • Willing to travel across NT regions; relocation assistance may be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Construct and maintain transmission/distribution lines (5kV–138kV) and streetlights.
  • Troubleshoot and repair line systems throughout NT regions.
  • Perform routine meter readings; install/remove single/ polyphase meters.
  • Select transformers/conductors/fuses for upgrades; balance feeders/phases.
  • Maintain safety and contribute to NTPC HSE programs.

Job description

Overview

Participates as a member of the Transmission Distribution Operations Division and performs Journeyperson level work in the construction and maintenance of electrical transmission and distribution systems, including substations underground and streetlight systems.

This position is based out of Fort Smith; however, the work area may be assigned to support any of NTPC’s service areas including the Dehcho/Sahtu, North Slave and Beaufort Delta regions.

Responsibilities
  • Always work safely, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health, Safety and Environment programs, comply with all rules and regulations and continually practice health and safety while performing any duties.
  • Ensure the safety of other employees, contractors and the general public in the workplace by following NTPC safe work practices.
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of the Health, Safety and Environment programs as well as NTPC’s safety culture.
  • Construct and maintain transmission and distribution lines (5kv to 138 kv), single phase and three phase, including the installation of transformers, poles, conductor and streetlights.
  • Troubleshoot and repair transmission and distribution line systems throughout the Northwest Territories.
  • Perform routine customer service meter reading; install and remove single phase and polyphase meters.
  • Select proper size transformers, conductors and fuses for various distribution system upgrades and repairs and perform feeder and phase balancing.
Qualifications
  • Certification as a Journeyperson Power Lineperson is required. An Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyperson Power Lineperson Certification preferred.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience in the installation and maintenance of power distribution line systems required. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • A Class 3 driver’s license with air brake endorsement is required.
  • Knowledge and the ability to assist in the use of specialized equipment and be familiar with test procedures on power transformers, breakers, metering tanks, high voltage cables and switches, voltage regulators (i.e. ratio tests, capacitance/dissipation factor testing, DC HYPOT testing).
  • Ability to read and work off blueprints, as well as interpret drawings, diagrams, and specifications of a variety of types of electrical equipment, including manufacturer’s manuals and parts books.
  • Team player with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Good planning, organizational and communications skills.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification is an asset.
  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout the regions.
  • Must provide a satisfactory criminal record check.

Salary for this position ranges from $50.05/hr.-$60.81/hr. plus a location allowance of $4,642 per annum. This position is located in Fort Smith, NT and does require the successful candidate to relocate here and assistance may be provided.
